Which Lawn Mower Deck Paint Kit Size Do You Need?

Match the kit to the deck's square footage. A 21 inch push mower deck comes in under 4 sq. ft., so the System Sampler Kit at 12.5 sq. ft. covers it with plenty left over. A 42 to 48 inch riding mower deck runs roughly 12 to 20 sq. ft. once the skirt and baffles are counted, which is past what the System Sampler covers, so the Large System Sampler Kit at 25 sq. ft. is the right call.

All three kits contain the same three products and the same process. The only thing that changes between them is how much material you get, so buying up a size costs you nothing in complexity. Running out of RustSeal partway through the second coat means waiting on a shipment while a half-coated deck sits with bare metal exposed.

How to Measure a Mower Deck for Paint

Multiply the deck's overall length by its overall width in inches, then divide by 144 to get square feet. That number is the flat footprint, and the underside is not flat, so add about a third for the skirt, the baffles, and the spindle housings, then round up. Two coats is the minimum, and the kit coverage figures above are already stated for two coats.

• 21 inch push mower: about 21 by 21 in, so roughly 3 sq. ft., call it 4 with the skirt. Well inside a System Sampler Kit.
• 42 inch riding mower: about 42 by 34 in, so roughly 10 sq. ft., call it 13 with the skirt. Past a System Sampler once you allow for waste, so step up.
• 54 inch riding mower: about 54 by 42 in, so roughly 16 sq. ft., call it 21 with the skirt. Comfortably inside a Large System Sampler Kit.

Those figures are estimates from common deck dimensions, not manufacturer specs. Measure your own deck if it is close to the line between two kit sizes. If you are also coating the top of the deck, the mower frame, or a trailer while you have the products out, add that area in before you choose.

What Paint Holds Up on a Mower Deck?

A moisture-cured rust preventive coating, not an enamel or a rattle can topcoat. KBS RustSeal is a single component moisture-cured urethane that cures to a hard, non-porous, flexible film. It bonds directly to treated rust, blocks the moisture and oxygen that drive corrosion, resists fuels, oils, most acids and alkalis, withstands 600°F, and will not crack, chip, or peel.

The reason ordinary paint fails under a deck is that it sits on top of the metal rather than into it, and it is porous. Moisture works through the film, reaches the steel, and rust spreads underneath while the surface still looks painted. RustSeal cures into a non-porous barrier that gets stronger with continued moisture exposure instead of weaker, the opposite of how ordinary paint behaves and the reason it holds up under a deck.

It also self-levels. Brushed RustSeal flows out and hides brush marks, so you can do a deck by hand with a brush and still get a smooth film, which matters because the skirt and the area around the spindles are hard to reach with a gun anyway.

What Colors Does RustSeal Come In?

The sampler kits offer RustSeal in 10 colors: Black Gloss, Black Satin, Silver Gloss, Grey Gloss, Off-White Gloss, Oxide Red Matte, Safety Green Gloss, Cat Yellow Gloss, Safety Blue Gloss, and Galvanized Matte. Most mower decks get Black Gloss or Black Satin on the underside, where nobody sees it, and a color matched to the machine on top if the deck is coming off anyway.

There is no graphite color in the RustSeal line. Silver Gloss and Galvanized Matte are the closest to a graphite or bare metal look. You can request a color sample before you order if the shade matters.

Does Painting a Mower Deck Stop Grass From Sticking?

Not entirely. RustSeal is not a non-stick coating, and KBS does not sell one for mower decks. What it does is replace a pitted, rusted underside with a smooth non-porous film, so clippings sit on a hard slick surface instead of packing into the pits. The deck scrapes and rinses easier, and buildup does not get the foothold it had on bare rusted steel.

That matters for more than convenience. Packed clippings are what hold moisture against the metal between mows, so a deck that cleans off in a minute with a hose stays dry and stops feeding the rust cycle. Keeping it clean is still on you. The coating just makes it a short job instead of a chisel job.

How to Paint the Underside of a Mower Deck

Strip the deck, degrease it, etch it, then seal it with two thin coats. The whole job is the KBS 3-Step Rust Prevention System run on a mower deck: KBS Klean to clean, RustBlast to etch, and RustSeal to seal. Plan on a weekend, most of which is waiting between coats.

1. Disconnect the spark plug and get under the deck

Pull the spark plug wire before the deck goes anywhere. Tip a push mower onto its side with the carburetor and air filter facing up so fuel and oil stay where they belong, or drop a riding mower deck and slide it out from under the machine. Working on a deck still bolted under a mower is the main reason these jobs end up half done, with the skirt and the back corners never properly reached.

2. Scrape and strip the underside

Scrape packed grass off with a putty knife, then take loose rust and failed paint down with a wire wheel, 320 grit sandpaper, or abrasive blasting. Paint that is still firmly stuck can stay, scuffed with 320 grit to give RustSeal a tooth to grip. Light surface rust can stay too, since RustBlast treats it in step 4. Only the loose, flaking material has to come off.

3. Degrease with KBS Klean

Mix KBS Klean with hot water at the dilution the label gives for your level of contamination, scrub with a bristle brush and a Scotch-Brite pad, then rinse and dry completely. Grease and oil left on the metal are the most common reason a coating lifts later. KBS Klean rinses clean rather than leaving a film behind. A household degreaser usually does not. 4. Etch the metal with RustBlast

Spray RustBlast on and keep the surface wet for 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on how bad the rust is, scrubbing with a Scotch-Brite pad as you go, then rinse and dry thoroughly. 5. Brush or spray two thin coats of RustSeal

Stir RustSeal from the bottom of the can to the top, then apply two thin even coats between 55 and 82°F, out of rain and high humidity. Recoat once the previous coat is dry to the touch, usually 2 to 6 hours, and get the next coat on within 8 hours. If more than 8 hours pass, wait a full 24 hours and scuff with a 320 grit Scotch-Brite pad before recoating. For spray application, reduce 5 to 10 percent with KBS #1 Thinner. Thin coats flow out and self-level. A thick coat sags and skins over before the film underneath has cured.

6. Let the deck cure before you mow

The deck can be handled and bolted back together after 1 day, but wait 7 days for RustSeal to reach full cure before you mow with it. Cutting on a green coat drives wet grass and sand into a film that has not finished hardening, which wears through the work you just did. Painting an Aluminum Mower Deck

Aluminum decks do not rust, but they do corrode, and the prep changes in one place: hold RustBlast on aluminum for 10 to 20 minutes rather than the 30 minutes to 2 hours a steel deck takes.
