The KBS Tank Sealer System is a complete 3-step fuel tank restoration kit that cleans, preps, and permanently seals the interior of any fuel tank from 1 to 100 gallons. Each all-inclusive kit contains KBS Klean (water-based heavy-duty degreaser), RustBlast (rust remover and metal etch that leaves a zinc phosphate bonding profile), and Gold Standard Tank Sealer, a single-component ready-to-use coating that resists modern fuels, ethanol additives, and temperatures up to 500°F.
Unlike single-product sealers, the KBS system prepares the tank surface with products formulated specifically to work together. RustBlast creates a zinc phosphate film that provides the ideal surface for permanent Tank Sealer adhesion, making peeling or delamination far less likely than with improperly prepped tanks.
Every kit includes detailed application instructions and all the materials you need to seal your tank correctly the first time. Satisfaction guaranteed.
"I tried this product myself... WORKED GREAT!!!!!"
Dave Stewart, Product Specialist for JP Cycles
Have a plastic tank? The KBS Tank Sealer System is formulated for metal, aluminum, and fiberglass tanks. For plastic fuel tanks, KBS offers a kit specifically designed to bond to plastic tank interiors.
Choose the kit size that matches your tank capacity. Each kit includes KBS Klean, RustBlast, and Gold Standard Tank Sealer scaled to fully prep and coat your tank interior in one pass.
Cure Time: Allow 96 hours (4 days) for Gold Standard Tank Sealer to fully cure before returning the tank to fuel service. Do not rush the cure with heat guns or direct sunlight.
Pro Tip: If your tank has old sealer residue or heavy varnish, add the optional KBS Strip to the 0-5 or 5-12 gallon kit before starting. Strip removes failed sealers and heavy buildup that KBS Klean cannot fully dissolve. Skip Strip if your tank interior is bare metal with no previous sealer.
Before and after: inside a tank sealed with the KBS system.
Once the interior is sealed, extend the life of your tank by protecting the exterior from rust and corrosion with products from the same KBS system.

The KBS Tank Sealer System is a complete 3-step fuel tank restoration kit that includes KBS Klean (water-based degreaser), RustBlast (rust remover and zinc phosphate etcher), and Gold Standard Tank Sealer, a single-component ready-to-use coating that permanently seals any fuel tank interior. Unlike single-product sealers, the KBS system is formulated as a matched set: RustBlast leaves a zinc phosphate bonding profile on the metal surface that provides significantly better Tank Sealer adhesion than a bare or inadequately prepped tank. Gold Standard Tank Sealer resists modern fuels, ethanol additives (E10, E15, E85), and temperatures up to 500°F, is non-flammable, and contains no Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK).
The KBS Tank Sealer System works on steel tanks, aluminum tanks, fiberglass tanks, diesel tanks, oil tanks, utility tanks, air compressor tanks, and non-potable water tanks. It is suited for tank sizes from small motorcycle tanks (under 5 gallons) to large agricultural or industrial fuel storage tanks up to 100 gallons. It is not rated for potable (drinking) water applications. For plastic fuel tanks, KBS offers a separate Plastic Tank Sealer Kit — this system is not designed for plastic tank interiors.
Yes. Gold Standard Tank Sealer is specifically formulated to be impervious to modern fuels, including ethanol blends such as E10, E15, and E85, alcohol fuel additives, and most common solvents. This makes it an ideal choice for vehicles running reformulated gasoline or flex-fuel applications, where older lacquer-based or single-component sealers may swell, soften, or delaminate over time.
Gold Standard Tank Sealer requires a full 96-hour (4-day) cure at room temperature before the tank should be returned to fuel service. The sealer may feel tack-free within a few hours, but the internal cure continues well beyond that point. Do not rush the cure with heat guns or direct sunlight — allow it to cure naturally for the strongest, most fuel-resistant result. Patience during the cure phase is the single most important factor in achieving a long-lasting seal. See the KBS article "Patience When Using Tank Sealer" for more detail.
For best results, apply all three steps of the KBS system when the ambient temperature is between 60°F and 85°F with low to moderate humidity. Avoid application in cold (below 50°F) or very hot (above 90°F) conditions, as extremes can affect how KBS Klean and RustBlast perform and how Gold Standard Tank Sealer flows and levels inside the tank. Once fully cured, Gold Standard Tank Sealer can withstand operating temperatures up to 500°F.
The KBS Tank Sealer System uses a 3-step process: (1) Clean with KBS Klean to remove grease, oil, varnish, and fuel residue from the tank interior. Allow it to dwell per instructions, then rinse thoroughly with water. (2) Etch with RustBlast to dissolve rust and etch the metal, leaving a zinc phosphate film that maximizes Tank Sealer adhesion. Rinse and allow the tank to dry completely before the next step. (3) Seal with Gold Standard Tank Sealer by pouring the sealer into the dry tank, rotating and sloshing to coat all interior surfaces, then draining the excess and allowing the sealer to cure for 96 hours before adding fuel. Detailed step-by-step instructions are included in every kit.
Yes, all three components of the KBS Tank Sealer System are safe for aluminum tanks. RustBlast removes oxidation and etches the aluminum surface, and Gold Standard Tank Sealer bonds to the treated aluminum. Many aluminum motorcycle tanks, ATV tanks, and small-engine fuel tanks have been successfully restored with this system. Refer to the Tank Sealer TDS and Directions for specific notes on aluminum application.
KBS Klean is water-based and cleans up with water. RustBlast also rinses away with water. Gold Standard Tank Sealer should be wiped from tools, containers, and skin before it cures; while still wet, use an appropriate solvent for cleanup per the TDS. Once Tank Sealer has fully cured inside the tank (96 hours), it becomes a permanent, fuel-impervious coating and does not require any further maintenance.
The KBS system's primary advantage is that the cleaner, etch, and sealer are manufactured and formulated by the same company to work as a matched system. The zinc phosphate film left by RustBlast provides an adhesion profile that competitor sealers applied over bare or insufficiently prepped metal cannot match. Gold Standard Tank Sealer contains no MEK, is non-flammable during application, and is rated for ethanol blends up to E85. Many customers who experienced delamination failures with other brands have reported long-term success after switching to the KBS system. For an independent comparison, see the KBS Tank Sealer Support Forum.
Once the interior has cured for 96 hours, apply KBS RustSeal to the exterior of the tank for permanent rust prevention. RustSeal bonds directly to rust and bare metal with no primer required. For a finished, factory-quality appearance, apply KBS MAXX as a topcoat over RustSeal. If your tank had physical holes larger than pinholes or minor weld seam damage, weld those before starting the KBS process. Both RustSeal and MAXX are available on kbs-coatings.com.
