How to Restore Rusty Metal Patio Furniture and Keep Rust from Coming Back

To restore rusty metal patio furniture, remove the loose rust and flaking paint, clean the metal with KBS Klean, etch it with KBS RustBlast, seal it with two thin coats of KBS RustSeal, and finish with UV stable KBS Top Coater. RustSeal stops the rust; the topcoat keeps the color from fading in the sun.

Why Does Metal Patio Furniture Rust?

Iron and steel patio furniture rusts when moisture and oxygen reach bare metal. Rain, humidity and condensation speed it up, and it starts wherever the old paint has chipped, cracked or worn through.

Scrollwork, welded joints, seams and tight crevices rust first because water collects there and dries slowly. Dirt packs into those spots too, so the rust often spreads under the surrounding paint before you notice it.

What You Need

KBS products in the order you use them, then tools and safety gear:

  • KBS Klean: removes dirt, grease and oil before etching
  • KBS RustBlast: dissolves remaining surface rust and leaves a zinc phosphate layer for adhesion
  • KBS RustSeal: seals the metal and tight rust against moisture and oxygen
  • KBS #1 Thinner (optional): only when spraying or thinning calls for it; xylene also works, lacquer thinner does not
  • KBS Fusion SEP Self-Etching Primer (optional): skip it if you topcoat within 8 hours or scuff instead
  • KBS Top Coater: the UV stable finish coat; BlackTop or KBS MAXX also work over RustSeal
  • Hurricane Paint Mixer: mixes RustSeal and KBS Top Coater thoroughly on a drill at low speed
  • KBS Paint Mixing Cup and KBS Paint Spout: pour cleanly, measure thinner and paint from the cup (store leftover RustSeal in a steel can or glass jar, not the cup)
  • KBS Poly Paint Brush for brushing, or the KBS HVLP Spray Gun for spraying
  • Wire brushes in several sizes, a paint scraper, 80 to 120 grit and 320 grit sandpaper, a rotary tool or drill-mounted wire wheel, Scotch-Brite pads, dental picks, compressed air and lint-free cloths
  • Chemical-resistant gloves, safety glasses, a respirator suited to sanding and spraying, protective clothing and good ventilation

How Do You Remove Rust from Metal Patio Furniture?

Remove rust from metal patio furniture by scraping, wire brushing and sanding away the loose rust and peeling paint until only solid metal and tight rust remain. You do not need to grind down to bare metal: KBS RustSeal seals tightly adhered rust, but loose, flaky rust has to come off first.

  1. Remove loose rust and flaking paint. Use a stiff wire brush or paint scraper on peeling paint, rust flakes and loose corrosion.
  2. Sand the rusted areas. Use 80 to 120 grit sandpaper on stubborn surface rust and rough spots, and feather the edges of paint that is still firmly attached.
  3. Work heavy corrosion with power tools. A drill-mounted wire wheel or abrasive attachment clears large areas faster. Keep the pressure light so you do not gouge the metal.
  4. Inspect the surface. Look for loose rust you missed, paint that is lifting, and deep pitting that needs extra attention.

How Do You Remove Rust from Wrought Iron Scrollwork and Crevices?

Remove rust from wrought iron scrollwork with small tools that reach where a standard wire brush cannot: narrow wire brushes, a rotary tool, sandpaper folded into strips, and dental picks. Then blow the loosened rust out with compressed air so it is not sealed under the coating.

  1. Small wire brushes: toothbrush-sized and brass-bristle brushes reach between scrolls, around welds and into tight corners.
  2. Rotary tools: a small wire brush or abrasive attachment clears stubborn rust from curves and recessed details. Use low speed and light pressure on decorative work.
  3. Folded sandpaper and abrasive strips: fold sandpaper into narrow strips, or wrap it around a small wooden dowel, for tight gaps, curved edges and the undersides of scrolls.
  4. Dental picks and detail tools: lift rust flakes and old paint out of seams the brushes cannot reach, without gouging the metal.
  5. Compressed air: blow out the loosened rust and debris. Wear eye protection and a respirator.

Check where the scrollwork meets the frame and wherever two pieces of metal overlap. A flashlight and a few different viewing angles will show rust hiding in those joints.

Remove all the loose rust you can reach; each recess does not need to be ground to bare metal. Tight rust that tools cannot remove can stay, because KBS RustBlast treats it next and KBS RustSeal seals it.

How Do You Prepare Metal Patio Furniture for Painting?

Prepare metal patio furniture for painting in three steps after rust removal: clean it with KBS Klean, etch it with KBS RustBlast, then let it dry completely. Even a slight film of grease, oil or fingerprints can ruin the paint's adhesion, and RustBlast leaves the zinc phosphate layer that RustSeal bonds to.

Step 1: Clean the Metal with KBS Klean

Mix 1 part KBS Klean with 5 parts hot water and apply it with a brush, sponge or spray bottle. Work it into the scrollwork, joints and recesses to lift dirt, grease and oil.

Scrub as needed and do not let KBS Klean dry on the surface. Rinse thoroughly with clean water, then let the furniture dry. Full mixing ratios are in the KBS Klean directions.

Step 2: Treat the Metal with RustBlast

Apply KBS RustBlast full strength and keep the surface wet, reapplying as needed: at least 30 minutes on smooth or lightly rusted metal, 40 to 60 minutes on moderate rust, and 1 to 2 hours on heavy rust. Work between 55 and 90°F. RustBlast dissolves the remaining surface rust, etches the metal and leaves a zinc phosphate coating that helps RustSeal bond.

Scrub with a Scotch-Brite pad and use a small brush to work RustBlast into decorative details, welds and tight crevices. Never let it dry on the surface during treatment.

Rinse thoroughly with water before the RustBlast dries. The rinse neutralizes the acid and prevents a heavy zinc phosphate buildup, while a thin whitish layer stays behind to help RustSeal grip. Coat the furniture within 7 days. See the RustBlast directions for details.

Step 3: Dry the Furniture Completely

Let the furniture dry completely before you apply KBS RustSeal. Hollow tubing, overlapping metal, joints and scrollwork hold water longest.

Blow water out of those spots with compressed air and give them time. Moisture trapped under the coating weakens adhesion and rust protection.

What Is the Best Way to Paint Metal Patio Furniture?

The best way to paint metal patio furniture is a two-layer system: KBS RustSeal as the rust barrier, then an opaque, UV stable topcoat. RustSeal is not UV stable: sunlight chalks and fades its color and sheen, though its rust protection holds. Outdoor furniture needs KBS Top Coater, BlackTop or KBS MAXX over it. This project uses KBS Top Coater.

Step 1: Apply KBS RustSeal

KBS RustSeal is a single-component, moisture-cured coating that shuts out moisture and oxygen so rust cannot keep growing. It seals tight residual rust and goes on prepared metal without a separate primer.

RustSeal cures to a hard, flexible film that will not crack, chip, flake or peel, which suits furniture that gets bumped and dragged. It levels out after brushing, so brush marks flow out on their own.

Brush, roll or spray RustSeal at 55 to 82°F and 30 to 80% relative humidity, out of the rain. Stir it thoroughly from the bottom of the can, by hand or with a Hurricane Paint Mixer on a drill at low speed; do not shake it. Pour what you need into a KBS Paint Mixing Cup and paint from the cup. RustSeal usually needs no thinning; for spraying, thin 5 to 10% with KBS #1 Thinner or xylene if needed, and never with lacquer thinner.

Apply at least two thin coats, about 2 mils each. Thin coats cure more completely than heavy ones. When brushing, cover an area once and move on; overworking the brush leaves marks. Recoat when the previous coat is dry to the touch with no fingerprint, typically 2 to 6 hours. If more than 8 hours pass, wait a full 24 hours and scuff with 320 grit or a green Scotch-Brite pad before the next coat. Full steps are in the RustSeal directions.

Step 2: Time or Prep RustSeal for the Topcoat

The easiest way to topcoat RustSeal is to apply KBS Top Coater while the last RustSeal coat is 3 to 8 hours old, with no other prep. Miss that window and use one of these two methods instead:

  • Scuff method: let RustSeal cure at least 24 hours, scuff it with 320 grit sandpaper, then clean and dry the surface before KBS Top Coater.
  • Self-etching primer method: let RustSeal cure at least 24 hours, dust on a light coat of KBS Fusion SEP Self-Etching Primer, and wait at least 30 minutes before KBS Top Coater.

Step 3: Apply KBS Top Coater

KBS Top Coater is a durable wrought iron furniture paint over RustSeal. It is UV stable, so it will not fade or chalk in the sun, and as a high solids 1K paint it resists running and sagging and covers about twice the area of a conventional 1K enamel.

Apply KBS Top Coater at 55 to 82°F, 70% relative humidity or lower, with the surface at least 5°F above the dew point. Stir it thoroughly for several minutes; the Hurricane Paint Mixer on a drill at low speed makes this quick. Apply one or two thin covering coats rather than one heavy coat, and recoat after 8 hours and before 7 days. A poly bristle brush gives a better finish than natural bristle.

Thin KBS Top Coater 10% for brush and roller work if desired, or 10 to 20% for spraying, using only KBS #1 Thinner or xylene.

Let KBS Top Coater cure fully before you put the furniture back in use: 4 to 7 days of air drying. See the KBS Top Coater directions and KBS Top Coater FAQs for more.

How Do You Keep Metal Patio Furniture from Rusting Again?

Keep patio furniture from rusting again by sealing it with KBS RustSeal under a UV stable KBS Top Coater finish, then touching up chips before bare metal is exposed. RustSeal shuts out moisture and oxygen, and Top Coater protects the color from the sun.

To keep the finish working:

  1. Inspect the finish now and then. Look for scratches and chips, especially where people sit, grip or set things down. Touch them up promptly so the exposed metal cannot rust.
  2. Clean the furniture occasionally. Wash with mild soap and water to remove dirt, pollen and bird droppings. Skip harsh cleaners and abrasive scrubbing.
  3. Keep water from collecting. Clear drain holes and remove debris that holds standing water in recesses.
  4. Avoid knocks and scrapes. Lift furniture instead of dragging it across rough surfaces, and keep metal parts from banging into hard objects.

Frequently Asked Questions About Restoring Rusty Metal Patio Furniture

How to paint rusted outdoor metal furniture?

Brush off the loose rust, clean the metal with KBS Klean, and etch it with KBS RustBlast. Then brush on at least two thin coats of KBS RustSeal and finish with an opaque, UV stable topcoat: KBS Top Coater, BlackTop or KBS MAXX. Outdoor furniture needs that topcoat because sunlight fades RustSeal's color and sheen, though its rust protection holds.

Can you use dish soap to clean outdoor furniture?

Yes, mild dish soap and water is fine for routine cleaning of furniture that is already painted. Before you paint, clean with KBS Klean instead. It is a concentrated degreaser made to strip the grease, oil and fingerprints that ruin paint adhesion, and it is the first step before KBS RustBlast.

Will dish soap remove rust?

No. Dish soap lifts dirt and grease, but it does not dissolve rust. Scrape and sand off the loose rust, then keep KBS RustBlast wet on the metal for 30 minutes to 2 hours. RustBlast dissolves the remaining surface rust and leaves a zinc phosphate layer that helps KBS RustSeal bond.

Does white vinegar actually remove rust?

White vinegar is a mild acid and can loosen light rust on small parts after a long soak, but it is not paint prep. It leaves no zinc phosphate layer for a coating to grip, so vinegar-cleaned metal still gets the full sequence: KBS Klean, KBS RustBlast, then KBS RustSeal.

Can You Restore Metal Patio Furniture That Is Severely Rusted?

Yes, if the metal is still structurally sound. Give heavy corrosion the full 1 to 2 hour KBS RustBlast treatment, kept wet, before KBS RustSeal. Rust that has eaten holes through the metal, cracked welds or thinned a load-bearing leg needs repair or replacement before any coating goes on.

Can You Paint Over Existing Paint on Metal Patio Furniture?

Remove the old paint when you can. For previously painted surfaces, strip all the paint before KBS Klean and KBS RustBlast. Where paint cannot be fully removed, scuff it with 400 grit sandpaper and clean with KBS Klean. KBS RustSeal over existing paint gives a durable, moisture-resistant coating, but it may not permanently seal the rust underneath.

Is It Better to Brush or Spray Paint Metal Patio Furniture?

Both work. KBS RustSeal and KBS Top Coater both level out after brushing, so brush marks flow out, which makes a brush practical on scrollwork. Spraying is faster on large, open pieces: thin RustSeal 5 to 10% and Top Coater 10 to 20% with KBS #1 Thinner. For brushing Top Coater, a poly bristle brush gives a better finish than natural bristle.

What If I Want to Preserve a Rust Patina Look?

Use KBS DiamondFinish Clear and skip RustBlast and RustSeal. Remove loose rust flakes, clean with KBS Klean mixed 10 parts water to 1 part Klean, rinse, let the metal dry, then apply DiamondFinish Clear. DiamondFinish Clear never goes over RustBlast or RustSeal.

For the full patina method, see how to clear coat over rust and keep the patina look with DiamondFinish Clear. More RustSeal answers are in the RustSeal FAQs.
