What Is the Difference Between 1K and 2K Paint?
1K paint is a single-component coating that dries as its solvent evaporates or as it reacts with air. 2K paint comes in two parts, the paint and a hardener or activator, and cures through a chemical reaction once they are combined. That chemical cure gives 2K topcoats like KBS MAXX more durability and chemical resistance than many 1K paints.
The tradeoff is handling. A 1K paint stays usable in the can for months after opening. A 2K paint starts curing the moment the hardener goes in, so you measure it, mix it and use it in one session.
What Are Some Examples of 2K Paints?
Common 2K products include single stage topcoats, clear coats and high-build primers. KBS makes all three: KBS MAXX topcoat, KBS MAXX Clear and KBS 2K DTM Build Primer. Each one uses its own mix ratio, so check the label of the product you are mixing.
KBS MAXX
KBS MAXX is a low VOC 2K polyurethane topcoat available in 26 colors for automotive, agricultural, marine and industrial work. It is a single stage finish with permanent UV stability and resistance to impact, chemicals, corrosion and weather, and it goes directly onto properly prepared ferrous metal and aluminum without a separate primer. KBS MAXX mixes at 3:1, and it is the product this guide uses to show every step.

KBS 2K DTM Build Primer
KBS 2K DTM Build Primer is a two-component urethane primer surfacer that mixes at 4:1. Its high-build formula fills sand scratches and small surface flaws, sands wet or dry, and goes directly onto properly prepared metal. It is also compatible with aluminum, galvanized metal, fiberglass, body filler and many existing primers and finishes.
What You Need to Mix and Apply 2K Paint
To mix and apply KBS MAXX you need the paint and activator, a graduated mixing cup, a drill-mounted mixer and an applicator. Everything below is listed in the order you use it.

What Does a 2K Paint Mixing Ratio Mean?
A 2K paint mixing ratio tells you how many parts of paint go with one part of hardener. Common ratios are 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1, and they differ by product: KBS MAXX is 3:1 and KBS 2K DTM Build Primer is 4:1. Always use the ratio on the label of the product you are mixing.
The numbers are parts, not a unit. A 4:1 ratio can be 4 ounces of paint to 1 ounce of hardener, or 8 ounces to 2 ounces. As long as both components are measured in the same unit and keep the same proportion, the ratio holds. A graduated mixing cup does that measuring for you.
How to Measure 2K Paint and Hardener
The easiest way to measure 2K paint is in a graduated mixing cup with printed ratio scales. The KBS Paint Mixing Cup carries 2:1 through 7:1 scales, a milliliter scale and thinner percentage marks, so you read the amounts off the cup instead of calculating them.
Before you measure, mix the KBS MAXX base thoroughly in its can. KBS MAXX is a high solids coating, and mixing the base well before activation is key to long-term durability and appearance. Use a Hurricane Paint Mixer on a variable speed drill.
Next, find the scale for your product's ratio. KBS MAXX needs three parts base to one part activator, so use the 3:1 scale.
Then decide how much mixed paint you need. Use the cup's milliliter scale to find that amount, and read across to the matching reference number on the 3:1 scale. In this example, about 400 milliliters of mixed paint lines up with the number 3 in the Hardener column. You will use that one number for both components.
Set the cup on a level surface and measure with that same reference number:
- Add the paint. Pour KBS MAXX base into the cup until it reaches your reference number in the Paint column. Here, that is 3.
- Add the hardener. Pour MAXX Activator until the mix reaches the same number in the Hardener column. Here, that is also 3.
- Thin only if needed. KBS MAXX is ready to use as mixed. If your application calls for reduction, add KBS #1 Thinner or xylene at 5 to 10% using the cup's thinner percentage marks. Never reduce KBS MAXX with lacquer thinner. It is not compatible as a reducer and will compromise the finish.
How Accurate Does a 2K Paint Mixing Ratio Need to Be?
Measure a 2K ratio as accurately as you can, because the paint and hardener are formulated to react in one specific proportion. Too much or too little hardener can keep the coating from curing properly and hurt its hardness, durability, adhesion or finish.
You don't need lab equipment to get it right. Use the manufacturer's ratio, read the cup at eye level, and never estimate by eye.
How to Mix 2K Paint
Mix 2K paint with a mechanical mixer until the paint and hardener are completely blended, then use the batch right away. For KBS MAXX, a Hurricane Paint Mixer or a similar mixing blade on a variable speed drill is highly recommended. Even mixing spreads the hardener through all of the paint so the whole film cures as intended.
How to Stir 2K Paint Properly
Stir 2K paint with a drill-mounted mixer at a controlled speed, moving the blade through the whole container. Run the Hurricane Paint Mixer along the sides and across the bottom, including the corners where unmixed material collects. The goal is to blend everything in the cup, not just the center.
Don't whip it. Running the drill too fast pulls air into the coating. Keep mixing until the color and consistency are completely even.
How Do You Know When 2K Paint Is Thoroughly Mixed?
2K paint is thoroughly mixed when it looks the same everywhere in the container, with no streaks, swirls or pockets of unmixed material. Check paint from the sides, bottom and corners as you go.
Don't judge by time alone unless the label gives a mixing time, and follow any induction or waiting period the product calls for before you apply it.
What Is the Pot Life of 2K Paint?
Pot life is how long a 2K paint stays usable after the paint and hardener are combined. It varies by product and temperature. KBS MAXX doubles in viscosity in about 30 minutes, so plan on a 30 minute pot life and mix only what you can apply in that time.
You don't have to race the clock. Know the pot life and plan around it. As the mix ages it thickens and gets harder to apply well. Once the pot life has passed, throw out what is left, even if it still looks usable.
Heat shortens pot life and cold lengthens it. Apply KBS MAXX only when the surface is between 45 and 110°F and at least 5°F above the dew point. A surface close to the dew point can carry condensation you can't see, which causes adhesion problems.
How Much 2K Paint Should You Mix at One Time?
Mix only as much 2K paint as you can apply within its pot life. For KBS MAXX, that is whatever you can put on in 30 minutes. If it is your first time with 2K paint, start with a small batch, see how far it goes, and size the next batch from there.
Small batches matter most when you brush or roll, since those take longer than spraying. Rather than mixing enough for the whole job, mix fresh batches as you go at the same ratio each time.
Can You Save Leftover Mixed 2K Paint?
No. Once 2K paint and hardener are mixed, the cure can't be paused, so mixed material can't be saved for another day. Never pour mixed KBS MAXX back into the original can. Dispose of anything left after the pot life according to the product label and local disposal rules.
Paint and hardener that were never combined keep in their own sealed containers, which is why you activate only what you need for each batch.
What Safety Precautions Should You Take With 2K Paint?
Read the label and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before you open a 2K product, then work with ventilation, gloves, eye protection, protective clothing and the respirator the SDS specifies. 2K paints can contain solvents and VOCs, and some 2K hardeners contain isocyanates, which can cause serious health problems when exposure isn't controlled.
Spraying needs the most care, because it puts paint mist in the air you breathe. Safety requirements vary between coatings, so don't carry one product's precautions over to another. Follow the SDS and any workplace rules for the product in your hands.

Applying 2K Paint With a Brush
Brush 2K paint with a quality poly bristle brush and work in small sections. A KBS Poly Paint Brush lets KBS MAXX flow out evenly, which cuts down on brush marks.
Load enough paint to keep a wet edge without laying it on heavy. Don't overwork the brush: with KBS MAXX, repeated passes over an area that has started to set can make it cure too quickly and leave brush marks. Brushing suits small surfaces, parts and equipment where spraying isn't practical, and small batches keep you inside the pot life.
Applying 2K Paint With a Roller
Roll 2K paint on larger, flat surfaces with a high-density foam roller or a low profile roller. Apply the paint evenly, keep a wet edge, and stop rolling an area once it starts to set.

Spraying 2K Paint
Spray 2K paint when you want the smoothest finish or need to cover large or complex shapes. For KBS MAXX, use the KBS HVLP Spray Gun with the 1.4mm tip at 15 to 20 psi air pressure (the directions allow any tip from 1.0 to 1.5mm). KBS MAXX sprays as mixed. If your gun needs more reduction, add KBS #1 Thinner or xylene at 5 to 10% and strain the mix through a 100 micron filter before it goes into the cup.

How Long Does 2K Paint Take to Cure?
2K paint takes days to fully cure even though it feels dry within hours. KBS MAXX is touch dry in about 30 minutes, through dry in 1 to 2 hours and hard dry in 3 to 4 hours, but it needs about 7 days to reach full cure when tested at 77°F.
Drying and curing are not the same thing. The chemical reaction that starts in the mixing cup keeps going after application, building the coating's final hardness and its resistance to chemicals, abrasion and weather. Cold temperatures and heavy coats take longer. Hold off on hard use until the full cure time has passed.
Common Mistakes When Mixing and Applying 2K Paint
Most 2K paint problems come from the wrong ratio, poor mixing, oversized batches or rushing the cure. Following the label at each step avoids them:
- Using the wrong paint-to-hardener ratio. Too much or too little hardener can keep the coating from curing and hurt its hardness, adhesion, durability or finish. Measure carefully at the ratio on the label.
- Not mixing thoroughly. Paint and hardener have to be completely blended to cure as intended. Mix the sides, bottom and corners, not just the middle.

- Putting the part into service too soon. A 2K coating can feel hard long before it is fully cured. Wait out the full cure time before exposing it to chemicals, abrasion or heavy use.
