Rust Prevention Paint: Stop Rust with RustSeal, Rust Converter and Frame Coater Kits

The best rust prevention paint seals the metal instead of just coloring it: it bonds to rusted or bare steel, cures non-porous so moisture and oxygen cannot reach the metal, and holds up to chemicals, road salt and heat. RustSeal is built that way: a single-component, moisture-cured coating rated to 600°F, sold from 8 oz to 5 gallons in 11 colors. Which color should I use?

Yes. A rust encapsulator seals tightly adhered rust inside a coating that air and moisture cannot pass, so the rust underneath stops growing. RustSeal goes directly over rust once loose scale is scraped off, and it bonds best when RustBlast has etched the surface first and left a zinc phosphate coating. Two coats at about 2 mils each give the full barrier.

For frames, undercarriages, trailers and equipment, a moisture-cured rust encapsulating coating such as RustSeal over a KBS Klean and RustBlast prep. For metal in direct sun, add an opaque UV-stable topcoat such as BlackTop, KBS Top Coater or KBS MAXX: RustSeal keeps protecting in sunlight, but its color and sheen chalk and fade, and a clear coat does not stop that.

RustSeal is ready to recoat when it is dry to the touch with no fingerprint, typically 2 to 6 hours depending on temperature and humidity. If more than 8 hours pass, wait a full 24 hours and scuff with 320 grit or a green Scotch-Brite pad before recoating. RustSeal is fully cured 24 hours after the final coat. Apply between 55 and 82°F at 30 to 80 percent relative humidity.

Yes. BlackTop, KBS Top Coater and KBS MAXX go directly over RustSeal that is 3 to 8 hours old with no other prep. Outside that window, let RustSeal cure 24 hours and scuff it with 320 grit first. BlackTop is the KBS topcoat for frames and chassis. Do not use KBS MAXX Clear over RustSeal.

Yes, for the best bond. KBS Klean removes grease, oil and dirt. RustBlast then removes rust and etches the metal: keep it wet for at least 30 minutes on light rust, 40 to 60 minutes on moderate rust and 1 to 2 hours on heavy rust, then rinse with water before it dries and let the surface dry completely.
