Tips for Applying DiamondFinish Clear (Can) and KBS MAXX Clear to Rust Patina

Because the moisture-cured formulations of DiamondFinish Clear and KBS MAXX Clear cure faster in humid conditions, special care is needed. Avoid applying either product in wet or high-humidity environments to prevent rapid, uneven curing.

General guidelines for brushing, rolling, and spraying:

• Apply in temperatures between 50–82°F in moderate to dry conditions. Avoid application during rain, high heat, or high humidity.
• Before each use, stir DiamondFinish Clear thoroughly but gently with a paint paddle, lifting and mixing from the bottom of the can upward.
• When using KBS MAXX Clear, thoroughly mix the MAXX Clear Base using a KBS Hurricane Paint Mixer or a mechanical mixing blade attached to a variable-speed drill. Once the base reaches a smooth, consistent texture, measure 3 parts mixed base into a clean container, add 1 part MAXX Activator, and mix both components thoroughly.
• Apply a minimum of three thin, even coats. Always apply multiple thin coats instead of fewer thick ones — avoid puddling and pooling.
• When brushing or rolling, apply and move on immediately rather than working back over wet product. Repeated brushing forces solvents out prematurely, causing brush marks and uneven curing.
• Re-coating can be done once the previous coat is dry to the touch and leaves no fingerprint — typically within 2–4 hours depending on temperature and humidity. For best results, apply additional coats within 8 hours of the previous coat curing.
• Under normal conditions, the work piece can be handled after 1 day, with full cure in at least 7 days. Avoid rain, high humidity, and abrasion during the curing period.

When brushing:

• Thinning is usually unnecessary. If needed to improve flow, thin by up to 10% using KBS #1 Thinner or Xylene only.
• For KBS MAXX Clear, the mixed base and activator are pre-thinned and ready to use, but can be thinned further with KBS #1 Thinner or Xylene if desired.

When rolling:

• Use a low-nap roller cover such as a mohair roller.
• DiamondFinish Clear can be thinned approximately 10–20% with KBS #1 Thinner or Xylene to improve flow and self-leveling.

When spraying with equipment:

• Always wear an air-supplied respirator or NIOSH/MSHA-approved organic vapor/particulate respirator, along with appropriate eye protection.
