Spray Guns and Sprayers for KBS Coatings

A 1.3mm tip works, but it is not what KBS sells and it is not required for KBS clears. General automotive refinish charts name 1.3mm as the standard clear coat tip because they are written around high-solids production clears. DiamondFinish Clear is specified at 1.0 to 1.6mm and KBS MAXX Clear at 1.0 to 1.5mm, so a 1.4mm tip sits inside both ranges and is the size KBS supplies with the HVLP Spray Gun. If a 1.3mm tip is already on your gun, use it.

Use the same 1.4mm tip that sprayed the color coat, or switch to the 1.0mm KBS HVLP Mini Spray Gun for small parts. Thin DiamondFinish Clear 10 to 15 percent with KBS #1 Thinner before spraying. KBS MAXX Clear comes pre-thinned and sprays as mixed, so no reduction is needed.

A 1.8mm tip is for build primers, sealers and heavier coatings that a smaller tip cannot atomize. In the KBS line that means KBS Top Coater, specified at 1.8 to 3.0mm, and KBS 2K DTM Build Primer. Choose the 1.8mm tip when you order the KBS HVLP Spray Gun; it ships with the gun at no extra cost. Additional tip sets are also sold separately if you want both sizes on hand.

A 1.4mm tip is the general purpose size for basecoats, clear coats, single stage paints and light to medium viscosity coatings. It sprays most of the KBS line, including RustSeal, BlackTop, KBS MAXX, Motor Coater and XTC.
