Why Does the First Coat of KBS Bed Liner Go On Thin?
A thin first coat gives the following coats a textured base to grip. A heavy first pass can run off a smooth surface or sag on vertical sides, while a light base coat followed by slightly heavier coats builds a durable film without runs.
Pro Tip: Before spraying the bed, mix a small amount and test spray a piece of cardboard. Less air pressure gives more texture, so dial the gun in on the cardboard until the texture looks right, then fill the hopper.

KBS Bed Renu is the better choice for small jobs: a bumper, a set of running boards, or a worn spot in an existing bed liner, where opening a gallon and cleaning a roller or gun is more work than the job itself.
KBS Bed Liner goes on a scuffed, cleaned, bone dry surface between 50°F and 90°F. Clean with KBS Klean mixed 5 parts hot water to 1 part KBS Klean, mix KBS Bed Liner thoroughly, cut in seams and corners, then roll or spray 2 to 3 coats from the front of the bed toward the back.
- Step 1: Scuff and Clean
- Scuff the bed with medium grit sandpaper or a scouring pad, blow out the dust with clean air, and wash with KBS Klean at 5 parts hot water to 1 part KBS Klean. Let the surface dry thoroughly. It must be clean, bone dry, non-glossy, and free of rust or flaking paint.
- Step 2: Mask and Mix
- Protect adjacent areas with painter's tape or masking paper. Mix KBS Bed Liner before use, with a drill mixer if possible, for a uniform product. Do not thin: thinner raises the VOC content and can change how the coating performs.
- Step 3: Cut In
- Cut in seams, corners, and hard to reach places first with a 3-inch rough foam, high quality roller before rolling or spraying the larger areas.
- Step 4: Roll or Spray
- Work from the front of the bed toward the back. To roll, use a high quality, solvent resistant textured foam roller. To spray, use a Schutz style or HVLP spray gun 18 to 24 inches from the surface in long, sweeping passes, varying the spray path to avoid shadowing and wiping the tip between passes to prevent buildup and drips. For the KBS Schutz Underseal Spray Gun, pour KBS Bed Liner from the gallon into a reusable empty dome quart can and thread the can onto the gun.
- Step 5: Build 2 to 3 Coats
- Apply a thin first coat, then slightly heavier coats. KBS Bed Liner can be recoated at any time.
- Step 6: Cure and Clean Up
- Wait 8 to 10 hours before stepping on the surface for touch-ups and 72 hours before placing objects on it. Clean tools with KBS #1 Thinner, xylene, or acetone.
Customer result: first coat rolled, second and third coats sprayed with a Schutz gun.
