What Is the Best Paint for a Motorcycle Gas Tank?
KBS MAXX is the best choice for the color on a motorcycle gas tank, and KBS MAXX Clear is the best clear coat. KBS MAXX is a 2K, UV stable topcoat that passes JP-5 jet fuel exposure for 7 days at 70°F, and it is rated to 300°F. It comes in 26 colors.
KBS MAXX Clear is KBS's recommendation for any constant fuel contact, on any project. Use it as the clear coat over KBS MAXX color, or over a spray paint finish you already like, to add durability and chemical resistance. Standard one-part spray paint is a different story: the KBS MAXX Clear directions directions say a clear coat over a base coat needs the base coat to be UV stable if the tank sits in the sun.
Which Prep Does Your Motorcycle Tank Need?
The prep depends on the condition of the surface you are starting with. There are three cases, and each ends with the same KBS MAXX product.
- Bare metal: clean it with KBS Klean, etch it with RustBlast, seal it with RustSeal, then apply KBS MAXX.
- Already coated (old paint or spray paint): remove any loose or flaky paint, sand with 300 grit, clean with KBS Klean, then apply KBS MAXX.
- A nice surface already on the tank: clean it well with KBS Klean, then apply KBS MAXX Clear over it for durability and chemical resistance.
Keep one rule in mind: KBS MAXX Clear never goes directly over RustSeal. RustSeal is not UV stable, and a clear coat cannot provide that UV barrier, so the RustSeal underneath degrades. On bare metal, put KBS MAXX color over the RustSeal first.
What Do You Need to Paint a Motorcycle Gas Tank?
You need KBS MAXX and KBS MAXX Clear for the paint, KBS Klean for cleaning, and the bare metal products only if the tank has no paint on it.
- KBS Klean: water-based degreaser that cleans the tank before anything else goes on
- RustBlast (bare metal only): dissolves rust and etches the steel
- RustSeal (bare metal only): seals the treated steel before the color coats
- KBS MAXX: the 2K, UV stable color coat
- KBS MAXX Clear (optional): the clear coat for durability and chemical resistance
- KBS #1 Thinner (optional): skip it unless the KBS MAXX directions needs thinning for your gun
- KBS HVLP spray gun: KBS recommends the 1.4 mm tip for KBS MAXX and KBS MAXX Clear
- KBS Hurricane Paint Mixer or similar mechanical mixing blade on a variable speed drill, and the KBS Paint Mixing Cup for measuring
- chemical-resistant gloves, safety glasses and proper personal protective equipment
- 300 grit sandpaper and masking for the filler neck, petcock and mounting holes
Step 1: Get the Tank Ready to Work On
Take the tank off the motorcycle if you can, empty the fuel and remove the fuel cap and petcock before you sand or spray. Mask the filler neck, petcock opening and mounting holes so cleaner, sanding dust and paint stay out of them.
Step 2: Prep the Surface
Prep the surface for the condition it is in: clean bare steel and seal it, sand painted steel and clean it, or just clean a good finish. Dilute KBS Klean about 5 parts hot water to 1 part KBS Klean, wash the tank, then rinse and let it dry completely. See the KBS Klean directions for full instructions.
Bare metal tank
After cleaning, spray RustBlast full strength and keep the surface wet for 30 minutes on smooth or lightly rusted steel, 40 to 60 minutes on moderate rust and 1 to 2 hours on heavy rust. Never let it dry during that time. Rinse thoroughly, let the tank dry completely and coat within 7 days. See the RustBlast directions.
Then seal the steel with at least two thin coats of RustSeal, about 2 mils each, between 55 and 82°F. Recoat once the first coat is dry to the touch, usually 2 to 6 hours, and within 8 hours. Apply KBS MAXX color directly over the RustSeal when it is between 3 and 8 hours old. If more time has passed, let the RustSeal cure 24 hours and scuff it with 320 grit first. See the RustSeal directions.
Painted tank
Remove any loose or flaky paint, then sand the whole tank with 300 grit sandpaper. Clean it with KBS Klean as above and let it dry completely before you apply KBS MAXX.
Aluminum tank
Dilute KBS Klean 25 parts hot water to 1 part KBS Klean for aluminum, because it is a non-ferrous metal. Wipe the surface, rinse it and let it dry.
Step 3: Mix KBS MAXX
Mix KBS MAXX at 3 parts MAXX Base to 1 part MAXX Activator, and mix only what you can apply within 30 minutes. Mix the Base thoroughly first with a KBS Hurricane Paint Mixer or a similar mechanical mixing blade on a variable speed drill, then measure, add the Activator and mix again.
The mixed paint is pre-thinned and ready to spray. If you need to thin it, use KBS #1 Thinner or xylene, never lacquer thinner. Lacquer thinner is for cleanup only. Pot life ends when the mixed paint doubles in viscosity, about 30 minutes. See the KBS MAXX directions.

Step 4: Spray the Color Coats
Spray KBS MAXX with a KBS HVLP spray gun and the 1.4 mm tip when the surface is between 45 and 110°F and at least 5°F above the dew point. The recommended film thickness is 1.0 mil dry per coat, so apply thin, even coats rather than one heavy coat.
Recoat anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 days after the previous coat, with no scuffing needed. Always wear protective gloves and safety glasses. Check the surface after each coat for runs, and keep the gun moving across the curved sides of the tank.
Step 5: Add KBS MAXX Clear
Add KBS MAXX Clear over cured KBS MAXX color, or over a spray paint finish already in good shape, to give the tank durability and chemical resistance. Mix it at the same 3 parts MAXX Clear Base to 1 part MAXX Activator, mix only what you can apply in 30 minutes, and spray it with the same gun.
If you are clear coating a finish you did not paint with KBS MAXX, clean it with KBS Klean first, scuff with 600 to 1200 grit if the surface needs it, and clean again. Rinse and let it dry thoroughly. If the tank sits in the sun, the color underneath must be UV stable. See the KBS MAXX Clear directions.
How Long Does a Painted Gas Tank Take to Cure?
KBS MAXX is touch dry in 30 minutes, through dry in 1 to 2 hours, hard in 3 to 4 hours and fully cured in at least 7 days. Those times were tested at 77°F and about 70 percent relative humidity, and cold or heavy coats take longer.
Wait 7 days before exposing the tank to fuel or chemicals. Fill it and reinstall it only after the finish has fully cured.
KBS MAXX Clear is polishable at 24 hours and also reaches full cure in 7 days. If you need to speed things up, force cure by allowing 15 minutes to flash, then 20 to 30 minutes at 140 to 180°F.

What About the Inside of the Tank?
The inside of a rusty motorcycle gas tank is a separate job from the outside paint. Seal it with the KBS 3-Step Tank Sealing System: clean with KBS Klean, treat the rust with RustBlast, then seal the steel with Gold Standard Tank Sealer. Do not put isopropyl alcohol in a gas tank.
The Cycle Tank Sealer Kit bundles the system for a motorcycle tank. For the full method, see How to Seal a Gas Tank.
What Are the Most Common Mistakes When Painting a Gas Tank?
- Skipping the cleaning step. Oil, fingerprints and dust keep paint from bonding, so clean every tank with KBS Klean before coating.
- Mixing too much at once. Mixed KBS MAXX doubles in viscosity in about 30 minutes, so mix small batches.
- Using lacquer thinner as a reducer. It is not compatible with KBS MAXX. Thin with KBS #1 Thinner or xylene.
- Clear coating over RustSeal. KBS MAXX Clear directly over RustSeal lets the RustSeal degrade, so topcoat with KBS MAXX color first.
Frequently Asked Questions About Painting a Motorcycle Gas Tank
How to spray paint your motorcycle?
Clean the surface with KBS Klean, sand a painted surface with 300 grit or treat bare metal with RustBlast and RustSeal, then spray KBS MAXX with a KBS HVLP spray gun in thin coats between 45 and 110°F. Add KBS MAXX Clear when you want extra durability and chemical resistance.
What kind of paint for gas tank?
Use KBS MAXX for the color and KBS MAXX Clear as the clear coat on the outside of a motorcycle gas tank. KBS MAXX is a 2K, UV stable topcoat rated to 300°F, and KBS recommends KBS MAXX Clear for any constant fuel contact.
What to put in a rusty motorcycle gas tank?
For the inside of a rusty gas tank, use the KBS 3-Step Tank Sealing System: clean with KBS Klean, remove the rust with RustBlast, then seal the steel with Gold Standard Tank Sealer. Do not put isopropyl alcohol in a gas tank. The Cycle Tank Sealer Kit bundles the system for motorcycle tanks.
Can you clear coat over spray paint on a gas tank?
Yes. If the tank already has a spray paint finish in good condition, clean it well with KBS Klean and apply KBS MAXX Clear over it for durability and chemical resistance. Scuff with 600 to 1200 grit first if the surface needs it, and make sure the paint underneath is UV stable if the tank sits in the sun.
Can you put KBS MAXX Clear directly over RustSeal?
No. RustSeal is not UV stable, and a clear coat cannot provide that UV barrier, so KBS MAXX Clear directly over RustSeal lets the RustSeal degrade. Topcoat RustSeal with KBS MAXX color first.
How long does KBS MAXX take to dry and cure on a gas tank?
Tested at 77°F and about 70 percent relative humidity, KBS MAXX is touch dry in 30 minutes, through dry in 1 to 2 hours and hard in 3 to 4 hours. Full cure takes at least 7 days, and KBS MAXX Clear follows the same schedule. Wait the full 7 days before the tank sees fuel or chemicals.
