What is KBS Rust Converter?
KBS Rust Converter is a rust converter paint in a 12 oz aerosol: a chemical rust neutralizer that reacts directly with iron oxide, converting active rust into a stable, inert, flat-black primed surface that is ready for paint with no sanding or grinding required. One can converts up to 20 square feet of rusted steel and the converted surface is compatible with most topcoats.
20 sq ft
Coverage per Can
KBS Rust Converter works through a chemical reaction, not a cover-up. The active ingredients react with iron oxide and transform it in place into a stable, inert black compound that bonds to the metal and acts as a primer, so there is no separate priming step. Because the chemistry needs rust to react with, KBS Rust Converter is made for rusty ferrous metal: iron and steel with active surface rust.
Brush off loose, flaky rust, degrease with KBS Klean if needed, and spray. The rust turns black as it converts, dries to the touch in about 10 minutes, and is ready for a topcoat after 24 hours. Or leave the tough matte-black finish as is.
One aerosol can. One step. Rust stopped. Satisfaction guaranteed!
Rust converter paint is a coating that reacts with rust and turns it into a black layer that also works as a primer, so paint can go on without grinding to bare metal. KBS Rust Converter is a rust converter paint in a 12 oz aerosol that dries flat black in 10 minutes and takes a topcoat after 24 hours.
Is KBS Rust Converter a Paint or a Primer?
KBS Rust Converter is both. The converted surface is a primer, so a topcoat goes straight on after 24 hours with no separate primer coat. Left uncoated, KBS Rust Converter is a durable flat-black finish, under 15 gloss units on a 60 degree meter, with gasoline resistance. The resin is a chain-stopped alkyd.
KBS Rust Converter needs rust to react with. Spray it on surfaces that are rusted across the area being coated, not on clean metal or on panels that mix rusty and clean spots. For clean or lightly rusted steel, the KBS 3-Step System with RustSeal is the better fit.

KBS Rust Converter works on any rusted iron or steel surface, including automotive body panels, chassis, frames, farm equipment, trailers, structural steel, tools, fencing, and marine metalwork. The surface must be rusty: KBS Rust Converter is not designed for clean metal or for non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, copper, or galvanized steel.
- Automotive
- Cars, motorcycles, wheels, chassis, frames, and body panels with active surface rust.
- Fleet & Truck
- Commercial vehicles, snow plows, and municipal equipment that lives in salt and weather.
- Farm & Industrial
- Tractors, ag equipment, implements, and construction machinery too big to sandblast.
- Infrastructure & Structural Steel
- Trains, iron doors, railings, fences, and structural steel where teardown is not an option.
- Marine
- Docks, trailers, and steel hardware exposed to constant moisture.
- Tools, Fencing & Home
- Hand tools, gates, patio furniture frames, and any rusted steel around the shop or yard.
Can KBS Rust Converter Be Used on Aluminum or Galvanized Steel?
No. KBS Rust Converter needs iron oxide to react with, so it only works on ferrous metals: iron and steel. Aluminum, copper, and galvanized steel do not form iron oxide and will not trigger the converting reaction. For non-ferrous or clean metal, use RustBlast and RustSeal from the KBS 3-Step System instead.
KBS Rust Converter converts rust and primes the metal in a single step, with no sanding or grinding required, and resists heat up to 250°F, which is higher than most consumer rust converters. The high-solids formula sprays from a pro-grade aerosol, dries to the touch in 10 minutes, and takes most topcoats after 24 hours.
- No Sanding Required: Apply directly to rusted surfaces after removing loose debris. No grinding, no mechanical prep. The chemistry does the work.
- Converts & Primes in One Step: Reacts with iron oxide to form a stable, matte-black compound that acts as a primer, so there is no separate priming step.
- Heat Resistant to 250°F: Rated for exhaust components, engine bays, and high-temp metal surfaces that other rust converters cannot handle.
- Topcoat Compatible: Works under most topcoats including oil-based paints, alkyd enamels, and epoxy coatings. Or leave it as-is for a matte-black finish.
- Pro-Grade Aerosol: Convenient high-pressure spray lays down uniform coverage on complex rusted surfaces, corners, and welds.
- Minimal Prep Required: Drastically reduces labor by eliminating the need for heavy wire brushing or sanding before coating.
- Chemical Transformation: High-solids formula converts iron oxide into a stable, inert black protective barrier instead of just covering it.
- Industrial Resistance: The moisture-proof seal prevents future rust growth and withstands heat up to 250°F.
- Rapid Cure Time: Dries to the touch in about 10 minutes and is ready for a second coat or topcoat after 24 hours.
One 12 oz aerosol can of KBS Rust Converter covers up to 20 square feet in a single coat. Heavily pitted or scaled rust has far more surface area than smooth rust, so expect 30 to 40 percent less coverage on rough surfaces, and plan a second can for deeply corroded areas.
| Size | Coverage (Single Coat) |
|---|
| 12 oz Aerosol | Up to 20 sq. ft. |
Dry times: dry to touch in 10 minutes; allow 24 hours before a second coat or a topcoat (at 72°F, 50% humidity, 1.5 mil thickness). Apply when the can is between 50°F and 90°F.
Pro Tip: KBS Rust Converter does not have to be top coated if a matte black finish is desired. Tough and durable, it can be left as is.
KBS Rust Converter differs from mechanical rust removal in that KBS Rust Converter transforms the rust in place instead of stripping it: one spray coat converts and primes in a single step, while sanding or grinding to bare metal must be followed by a separate primer before any paint goes on.
| | KBS Rust Converter | Sand / Grind + Primer |
|---|
| Surface prep | Brush off loose rust only | Full mechanical removal to bare metal |
| Steps to paint-ready | 1 (converts and primes) | 2 or more (strip, then prime) |
| Labor | Minutes with an aerosol | Hours of grinding on large or complex parts |
| Heat resistance | 250°F | Depends on primer, varies widely |
| Works in tight spots | Yes, spray reaches welds and corners | Limited by tool access |
KBS Rust Converter earns its place on rusted metal that cannot practically be stripped: weld seams, box sections, pitted surfaces and anywhere a sander or a blast nozzle cannot reach. On bare or lightly rusted steel that can be prepped properly, RustBlast followed by RustSeal delivers the most durable, non-porous protection KBS makes. Match the product to how much rust is actually there.
KBS Rust Converter is the fast one-step fix for rusted steel when time or accessibility prevents a full teardown. The KBS 3-Step System (KBS Klean, RustBlast, and RustSeal) is the permanent route: it takes more prep but cures to the most durable, non-porous rust protection KBS Coatings makes.

Yes, on rusted steel. KBS Rust Converter works on rusted automotive body panels, chassis parts, frames and exhaust components that stay under 250 degrees F, and the converted surface resists gasoline. KBS Rust Converter needs rust to react with, so it is not for clean paint, clean bare steel, aluminum or galvanized parts, or panels that mix rusty and clean metal. Topcoat after 24 hours or leave it flat black.
Wait 24 hours before painting over KBS Rust Converter. KBS Rust Converter dries to the touch in about 10 minutes and is ready for a second coat or a topcoat after 24 hours at 72 degrees F, 50% humidity and 1.5 mils. Cooler temperatures, high humidity and thick coats extend that time. Once cured, KBS Rust Converter takes most topcoats, including oil-based paints, alkyd enamels and epoxy coatings.
Rust killer is a shopping name, not one type of product: it gets used for rust converters, rust removers and rust-inhibiting coatings alike. A rust converter such as KBS Rust Converter reacts with the rust and transforms it in place into a stable black primed surface without removing it. A rust remover strips the rust off and leaves bare metal that still needs a primer and paint.
KBS Rust Converter works through a chemical reaction with iron oxide (rust). When applied to a rusty metal surface, the active ingredients react with and neutralize the rust, transforming it into a stable, inert, matte-black compound. That converted surface acts as a ready-to-paint primer, with no sanding or grinding required.
No. KBS Rust Converter is formulated to minimize surface preparation. Remove any loose, flaking rust or debris and apply the converter directly to the rusted area. That is one of the key advantages of a rust converter over mechanical rust removal.
KBS Rust Converter is designed for ferrous metals, meaning any iron or steel surface affected by rust. Common uses include automotive body panels, chassis, frames, farm equipment, trailers, tools, fencing, structural steel, and marine metalwork. It is not intended for non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, copper, or galvanized steel.
One 12 oz aerosol can covers approximately 20 square feet in a single coat. Coverage varies with the severity of the rust, surface texture, and application technique. Heavily pitted or deeply corroded surfaces may need a second coat and will reduce coverage yield.
Yes. KBS Rust Converter is heat resistant up to 250 degrees F (121 degrees C), which makes it suitable for exhaust components, engine bay surfaces, and other areas that see elevated temperatures.
For best results, spray when the can is between 50 degrees F and 90 degrees F (10 to 32 degrees C), and store it between 40 and 100 degrees F. If the can has been sitting in a cold shop or truck, bring it inside and let it come up to room temperature before spraying. Shake the can for at least one minute after the rattle is heard.
After 24 hours the converted surface is ready for paint. KBS Rust Converter acts as the primer, so a topcoat such as an oil-based paint, alkyd enamel, or epoxy coating can go straight on. If a matte black finish is what you want, no topcoat is needed: the converted surface is durable left as is.
