KBS Top Coater Aerosol is the recommended UV-stable finish coat for surfaces sealed with RustSeal, and it is the product KBS points customers to whenever a RustSeal-coated part will live in consistent sunlight. Applied over cured RustSeal, the two coatings form a complete system: RustSeal locks moisture and oxygen out at the metal, and KBS Top Coater handles UV, color, and chemical attack from the outside.
KBS Top Coater Aerosol can also be sprayed directly onto clean bare steel and aluminum with no primer. The professional fan-pattern spray head and the no-run, no-sag high-solids formula produce factory-quality results on vertical surfaces without special equipment.
KBS Top Coater Aerosol gives you twice the coverage of conventional spray paints with a finish that won't fade, run, or sag. Satisfaction guaranteed!
KBS Top Coater 1K Aerosol is used as the UV-stable finish coat over RustSeal, and as a direct-to-metal finish on bare steel and aluminum. Common jobs include automotive frames and engine bays, agricultural and construction equipment restored to OEM colors, fleet and municipal safety colors, marine metalwork, and flat camo finishes on outdoor gear.
- UV-Exposed Metal Surfaces — The primary topcoat for RustSeal-coated surfaces that will face consistent sunlight; the 100% UV stable formulation prevents fading and chalking.
- Bare Metal Finishing — Bonds directly to clean bare steel and aluminum without a primer, delivering a durable professional finish in a single pass.
- Equipment Restoration — OEM color matches for John Deere, Case, Ford, IHC Red, Caterpillar, and Allis Chalmers make it the go-to spray for restoring agricultural and construction machinery to factory colors.
- Automotive and Chassis Work — Frames, engine bays, brackets, and suspension components where a tough, attractive finish is needed over sealed metal.
- Marine and Watercraft — Chemical and salt-spray resistance suits boats, yachts, and personal watercraft metalwork and trim.
- Fleet and Municipal Vehicles — Safety color variants (green, yellow, blue, red, orange) meet visibility requirements for commercial and fleet applications.
- Camo and Tactical Finishes — Flat camo variants (Black, Green, Desert Tan, Brown) are purpose-built for hunting equipment, firearms furniture, and outdoor gear.
- Tools, Doors, and General Hardware — The fast-drying, rock-hard formula handles the abuse of everyday working surfaces without chipping or peeling.
KBS Top Coater Aerosol differs from a standard spray can in solids content and durability. The high-solids formula puts at least twice as much paint on the surface per can, the fan-pattern head sprays an even overlap-ready band instead of a round cone, and the cured film is 100% UV stable, chemical resistant, and rated to 300°F.
- Twice the Coverage: The high-solids formula delivers at least 2x the coverage of conventional aerosol spray paints. A 16oz can covers up to 38 sq. ft. and a 12oz can covers up to 30 sq. ft. in one coat.
- Rock Hard Yet Flexible: KBS Top Coater Aerosol cures to a tough film that handles vibration, thermal cycling, and physical abuse without cracking or peeling.
- Professional Fan Pattern Spray Head: The built-in fan nozzle delivers even, overlap-ready coverage that eliminates the blotchy results typical of consumer spray paints.
- 100% UV Stable: The film does not fade, chalk, or discolor with prolonged sunlight exposure, which is the property that makes KBS Top Coater the recommended finish for outdoor RustSeal applications.
- No Run, No Sag: The thick, high-solids formula holds position on vertical surfaces without dripping or sagging, even when applied liberally.
- Chemical Resistant: KBS Top Coater Aerosol withstands fuels, oils, road salts, and cleaning solvents that degrade conventional paint.
- 300°F Temperature Resistance: The cured film handles the heat of engine bays, exhaust-adjacent components, and industrial equipment without bubbling or discoloring.
- Outstanding Adhesion: Bonds aggressively to paints, primers, and bare metal surfaces including cured RustSeal.
- Fast Drying: Quick dry time moves a project along without long waits between coats, cutting total project time significantly.
What Does "100% UV Stable" Actually Mean on a Painted Part?
A UV stable coating keeps its color and gloss under sunlight instead of chalking to a dull, powdery surface. Non-UV-stable coatings such as RustSeal break down at the surface when left exposed outdoors, which is why KBS specifies KBS Top Coater over RustSeal on any part that will sit in the sun.
KBS Top Coater Aerosol bonds to bare steel and aluminum, fully cured RustSeal, sound primers, existing painted surfaces, fiberglass, and woodwork. Typical substrates include automotive frames, tractor and excavator sheet metal, snow plows, boat trim, tools, and doors. Coverage drops by up to 50 percent on bare wood and rough or sandblasted metal.
- Automotive & Powersports
- Cars, trucks, motorcycles, wheels, and bicycles. Use over RustSeal on frames, engine bays, brackets, and suspension components for a complete rust-prevention and finish system.
- Agricultural & Construction Equipment
- Tractors, combines, skid steers, excavators, and implements. OEM color matches for John Deere (New Green, New Yellow, Classic Green), Case (Power Tan), Caterpillar (New and Old Yellow), and Allis Chalmers Orange allow factory-accurate restoration.
- Commercial & Fleet Vehicles
- Snow plows, municipal vehicles, box trucks, and trailers. Safety color variants (Safety Green, Yellow, Blue, Red, Orange) meet visibility and compliance requirements for fleet and municipal operators.
- Marine & Watercraft
- Boats, yachts, personal watercraft, and trailers. Chemical and salt-spray resistance protects metal components, fittings, and trim exposed to harsh marine environments.
- Industrial & Aerospace
- Trains, industrial machinery, aerospace components, and manufacturing equipment. High-temperature resistance and chemical toughness stand up to demanding production and maintenance environments.
- General Hardware & Outdoor
- Tools, doors, woodwork, outdoor furniture, and camo applications. Flat camo variants (Black, Green, Desert Tan, Brown Camo) are purpose-built for hunting gear, blinds, and tactical equipment.
Can KBS Top Coater Aerosol Be Sprayed Over Existing Paint?
KBS Top Coater Aerosol bonds to sound, well-adhered paint and primer after a scuff sanding and a degrease with KBS Klean. Loose, flaking, or lifting paint has to come off first, because the topcoat is only as sound as the layer beneath it. On bare plastics and fiberglass, KBS Fusion SEP self-etching primer improves bite before the color coat goes on.
A 16oz can of KBS Top Coater Aerosol covers up to 38 sq. ft. in a single coat, and a 12oz can covers up to 30 sq. ft. Those figures assume a smooth, properly prepared surface. Rough, sandblasted, or bare wood surfaces absorb more material and can cut yield by as much as 50 percent.
| Can Size | Typical Coverage (1 coat) |
| 16oz Can | Up to 38 sq. ft. |
| 12oz Can | Up to 30 sq. ft. |
| Rough / Sandblasted Surfaces | Expect up to 50% reduction |
Coverage note: The high-solids formula delivers at least twice the coverage of conventional spray paints in the same can size, so fewer cans are needed and total project cost drops even though the price per can is higher.
Why Does Rough or Sandblasted Metal Use So Much More Paint?
A blasted or heavily textured surface has far more actual surface area than its measured square footage suggests, and the profile has to be filled before a continuous film forms. Bare wood behaves the same way because the grain absorbs paint. Plan on buying roughly twice the number of cans for blasted metal or raw wood.
Pro Tip: For maximum UV protection and rust resistance, apply KBS Top Coater Aerosol over two coats of RustSeal. The combination locks out moisture at the metal surface while the Top Coater handles UV and chemical attack from the outside.
KBS Top Coater Aerosol differs from conventional aerosol enamel primarily in solids content and outdoor life: KBS Top Coater puts at least twice as much paint on the surface per can and holds its color under UV without chalking, while conventional spray paint applies a thinner film that commonly fades and chalks after a season outdoors.
| | KBS Top Coater 1K Aerosol | Conventional Aerosol Spray Paint |
| Coverage per 16oz can | Up to 38 sq. ft. in one coat | Roughly half the coverage per can |
| UV stability | 100% UV stable, will not fade or chalk | Varies, fading and chalking common outdoors |
| Heat resistance | 300°F | Varies, commonly under 200°F |
| Chemical resistance | Resists fuels, oils, road salts, and solvents | Typically softens or lifts with fuel and solvent contact |
| Spray pattern | Professional fan-pattern head | Round cone, prone to blotchy overlap |
| Vertical surfaces | No run, no sag even when applied liberally | Runs and sags when applied heavily |
Conventional spray paint remains the cheaper choice for a one-off indoor part that never sees sunlight, fuel, or heat, and big-box retail lines carry a far wider color selection than the 30-plus shades KBS stocks.
KBS Top Coater Aerosol is step three, the finish coat. Step one cleans the surface with KBS Klean, step two seals rust and bare metal under two coats of RustSeal, and step three adds color, UV stability, and chemical resistance with KBS Top Coater Aerosol over the fully cured RustSeal.
- Step 1 — Clean
- Degrease and prep the surface with KBS Klean to remove oils, wax, and contaminants so the coatings bond properly.
- Step 2 — Seal
- Apply 2 coats of RustSeal to encapsulate rust and protect bare metal from moisture. RustSeal is the foundation of long-term corrosion protection.
- Step 3 — Finish
- Apply KBS Top Coater Aerosol over fully cured RustSeal for UV stability, color, and chemical resistance.

KBS Top Coater 1K Aerosol is a high-solids, single-component aerosol spray paint engineered for professional-quality results on metal, wood, and painted surfaces. Unlike conventional spray paints, the high-solids formula delivers at least twice the coverage per can: a 16oz can covers up to 38 sq. ft. and a 12oz can covers up to 30 sq. ft. It also uses a professional fan-pattern spray head for even, blotch-free application. The formula is 100% UV stable and will not fade, resists chemicals and temperatures up to 300°F, and is formulated as the topcoat partner for RustSeal in the KBS corrosion-prevention system.
KBS Top Coater Aerosol adheres to bare steel and aluminum, cured RustSeal, painted surfaces, primers, and woodwork. It is used across cars, motorcycles, wheels, bicycles, tractors, agricultural and construction equipment, commercial vehicles, snow plows, boats and personal watercraft, aerospace components, tools, and doors. It also bonds over most existing topcoats and primers, which makes it a strong touch-up or refinish option. Coverage is reduced by up to 50% on bare wood or heavily textured and sandblasted surfaces.
KBS Top Coater Aerosol can be applied directly to clean bare metal without a primer. For maximum rust protection and long-term performance, KBS strongly recommends applying it over two coats of RustSeal instead. RustSeal seals the metal against moisture and oxygen at the substrate level while KBS Top Coater handles UV stability, color, and chemical resistance at the surface, and the two-product system outperforms either product used alone. If a project needs an adhesion primer for a non-metallic substrate, KBS Fusion SEP self-etching primer is compatible as an inter-coat layer.
A 16oz can covers up to 38 sq. ft. in a single coat, and a 12oz can covers up to 30 sq. ft. in a single coat. Those figures assume a smooth, properly prepared surface. On rough, sandblasted, or bare wood surfaces, expect up to a 50% reduction in coverage. Because of the high-solids formula, KBS Top Coater Aerosol delivers at least twice the coverage of conventional spray paints in the same can size, which makes it more cost-effective per square foot even at a higher price per can.
KBS Top Coater 1K Aerosol is rated to withstand up to 300°F. That covers engine bay components, valve covers, brackets, and other parts that see moderate heat. For sustained temperatures above 300°F, such as exhaust manifolds or headers, use a dedicated high-temperature coating instead. For components that run at or below 300°F and also need UV resistance and color, KBS Top Coater Aerosol is the right choice.
Start with a clean, dry surface: degrease with KBS Klean and allow it to dry completely. If applying over RustSeal, make sure the RustSeal is fully cured before topcoating. Shake the can thoroughly for at least 2 minutes after the mixing ball begins moving. Hold the can 10 to 12 inches from the surface and spray in steady, overlapping passes using the fan-pattern nozzle. Apply thin, even coats rather than one heavy coat to prevent runs. Work between 50°F and 90°F and avoid spraying in direct sunlight on hot metal. After use, invert the can and spray briefly to clear the nozzle tip. Full step-by-step instructions are on the Top Coater Aerosol directions page.
KBS Top Coater Aerosol bonds to fiberglass and many hard plastics when the surface is properly prepared. For fiberglass, lightly sand to create mechanical adhesion, wipe clean, and apply in thin coats. On flexible plastics, adhesion varies significantly by plastic type, so test a small inconspicuous area first. For best adhesion to plastics and fiberglass, apply a compatible adhesion primer such as KBS Fusion SEP before the Top Coater. Contact the KBS technical team if you are unsure about a specific substrate.
After use, invert the can and spray for 2 to 3 seconds until only propellant comes out. That clears the nozzle and prevents clogging next time. For overspray or drips on unintended surfaces, remove the wet product with MEK or acetone before it cures. Once fully cured, the coating is very resistant to solvents and mechanical removal is required. Dispose of empty or unusable cans according to local regulations. Use nitrile gloves and adequate ventilation during application, and do not spray near open flames.
These are two different tools. KBS Top Coater Aerosol is a pigmented topcoat available in 30+ colors that provides UV stability, chemical resistance, and color in a single product. DiamondFinish Clear 1K Aerosol is a water-clear, permanently flexible clear coat that adds gloss and additional UV and chemical protection over an existing color coat, but provides no color of its own. The two work well together: apply KBS Top Coater for color, then DiamondFinish Clear Aerosol on top for deeper gloss and an added layer of protection. DiamondFinish Clear is rated to 250°F and reaches 5H pencil hardness after 5 days.
Screen color calibration and display settings vary from device to device, so the color shown online may not match what arrives.
