RustSeal as Concrete Floor Paint

KBS MAXX as Concrete Floor Paint

KBS MAXX is a two-component (2K) single-stage polyurethane topcoat that works as base coat and clear coat in one application. It is permanently UV stable, high solids, low VOC and low HAPs, and it dries fast: touch dry in 30 minutes and hard in 3 to 4 hours. The base and activator cross-link chemically, which is what gives it hardness and chemical resistance a single-component coating cannot reach.

When to Use KBS MAXX on Concrete

Use KBS MAXX when the floor gets regular sunlight, when you want an opaque finish that keeps its color and gloss, or when low VOC and low HAPs matter for the space. It is also the right choice when you need to get back on the floor sooner, since it dries hard in 3 to 4 hours rather than overnight.

Using RustSeal Under KBS MAXX

RustSeal costs less per gallon than KBS MAXX, so some customers roll RustSeal as a base coat and finish with KBS MAXX for UV stability. This is the same pairing KBS uses on metal, where two coats of RustSeal under KBS MAXX doubles the salt spray rating from 1,000 hours to 2,000 hours.

• Let the RustSeal cure 24 hours, then scuff it lightly with 320-grit sandpaper or a green Scotch-Brite pad before the KBS MAXX goes on.
• Apply at least one medium coat of RustSeal at 2 mils DFT and at least one medium coat of KBS MAXX at 2 mils DFT.

DiamondFinish Clear as a Clear Concrete Sealer

DiamondFinish Clear is a single-component, high-gloss, moisture-cured urethane clear coat that seals concrete while leaving the surface visible. It is UV stable and will not yellow, and it stays permanently flexible so it does not crack as the slab moves. It reaches 7H pencil hardness after 7 days.

When to Use DiamondFinish Clear on Concrete

Use DiamondFinish Clear when you want to protect the slab and still see it, and when a high-gloss finish is what you are after. It also works as a top coat over cured RustSeal on an indoor floor for extra depth. Note that a clear coat does not provide UV protection for RustSeal, so this pairing belongs indoors and out of direct sunlight.

KBS MAXX Clear as a Clear Concrete Sealer

KBS MAXX Clear is the pigment-free version of KBS MAXX: the same two-component polyurethane chemistry, the same 160 inch-pound impact resistance and 1,000-hour QUV rating, without the color. Where DiamondFinish Clear gives you one gloss level, KBS MAXX Clear gives you three, and it is polishable 24 hours after application.

When to Use KBS MAXX Clear on Concrete

Use KBS MAXX Clear when you want a clear sealed floor in a sheen other than high gloss, or when low VOC and low HAPs are a priority for the space. The Satin option at 45 to 55 percent gloss and the Flat option at 5 to 15 percent gloss both cut the glare that a full-gloss floor throws under shop lighting.

One limit worth knowing: KBS MAXX Clear is not designed to go over RustSeal. RustSeal needs an opaque solid-color topcoat to protect its appearance, and no clear coat can provide that. Apply KBS MAXX Clear direct to the concrete, or over a cured opaque color coat such as KBS MAXX.

How to Prepare Concrete Before Painting It

Concrete has to be swept, degreased with KBS Klean, etched to open the surface, and confirmed completely dry before any coating goes on. Prep is where concrete floor jobs succeed or fail, because a coating can only bond to what you give it.

New concrete needs at least 60 days to cure first, or until it is fully cured. That gives the pH time to drop to a level where the coating can bond. A new slab in good shape skips most of the rest of this list: no old paint to scrape, no cracks to fill, no sanding, no degreasing.

Clean the Concrete

Cleaning removes everything that would sit between the coating and the slab, and the test for finishing is simple: water no longer beads up anywhere on the surface. Grease and oil that have soaked into the pores need a scrub brush or an electric floor scrubber to lift out, and often more than one pass.

1. Sweep or shop-vac the floor to remove loose debris and contamination.
2. Scrape off stuck-on debris with a scraper or shovel.
3. Wash the surface with KBS Klean, a water-based cleaner and degreaser. Choose a dilution rate that matches how contaminated the floor is.
4. Work the surface with a bristle brush or electric floor scrubber to pull dirt, grease, and oil out of the pores. Repeat as needed. The stains are gone when water no longer beads up.
5. Rinse thoroughly and let the floor dry.
6. Fill any cracks or pits with NuMetal Epoxy Putty or a similar filler, following the product directions.

Why Concrete Has to Be Etched

Etching removes a thin layer off the top of the slab, which opens the pores and gives the coating a profile to grip. A troweled concrete surface is closed and slick, and a coating applied to it has very little to hold onto. You can etch with a muriatic acid wash or by grinding the concrete.

• Remove the thin surface layer with a muriatic acid wash or concrete grinding.
• Rinse well and let the floor dry completely. A fan or dehumidifier speeds this up.

How to Test Concrete for Moisture

Tape a 2-to-3-foot sheet of plastic wrap tightly to the concrete and leave it overnight. If no condensation forms under the plastic in the morning, the slab is dry and ready to coat. Residual moisture in the concrete is one of the most common causes of a floor coating failing later, and this test costs nothing to run.

Preparing RustSeal or KBS MAXX for a Top Coat

Let the first coating cure 24 hours, then scuff it lightly with 320-grit sandpaper or a green Scotch-Brite pad before the top coat goes on. The scuff gives the next coat a mechanical key on a surface that has already cured hard and non-porous. This applies whether you are topcoating RustSeal or KBS MAXX.

Adding Floor Flakes or Silica Sand

Floor flakes and silica sand solve two different problems. Flakes are decorative and get broadcast onto the wet coating. Silica sand adds traction and gets mixed into the coating before it goes down. They are applied differently, so do not treat them as interchangeable.

Adding Floor Flakes

Broadcast the flakes evenly over the coating while it is still wet, then let the coating cure with the flakes embedded in it. Floor flakes work with any of the four coatings covered here. Sprinkle them from a consistent height so the density stays even across the floor.

To seal the flakes under a clear top coat, use DiamondFinish Clear over any of them, or KBS MAXX Clear over KBS MAXX. KBS MAXX Clear is not designed to go over RustSeal, so on a RustSeal floor use DiamondFinish Clear.

Adding Silica Sand for Traction

Mix silica sand into the coating at a ratio of 4 parts paint to 1 part sand, adding the sand slowly. Only mix sand into the KBS moisture-cured urethanes, RustSeal and DiamondFinish Clear. The sand must be completely dry and free of impurities, because any moisture or contamination in it interferes with the moisture cure.

• Mix the sand in slowly until you reach 4 parts paint to 1 part sand.
• On opaque finishes, follow the sanded coat with a sand-free coat. The traction stays, and the dark specks the sand creates become less noticeable.
• Recoat once the previous coat is dry to the touch and does not leave a fingerprint, typically 2 to 6 hours depending on temperature and humidity.
