What Is Top Coat Paint? BlackTop, KBS Top Coater, and KBS MAXX Compared

Top coat paint is a colored finishing paint applied over a primer or base coat as the final protective and decorative layer. What Is Top Coat Paint?

A top coat is a transparent, translucent, or pigmented finish applied over an underlying substrate or base coat to seal and protect it. Top coat paint specifically refers to a colored finishing paint used for decorative or protective purposes over a primer, base coat, or other coating that is not meant to be the final finish. Compatibility matters: applying an incompatible top coat can cause a chemical reaction with the base coat and ruin the paint job.

Types of Top Coats

Type Common Use
Top coat wax Finishing wood; brings out color depth, limited scratch protection
Epoxy top coat Wood and concrete floors, appliances, electronics
Lacquer, varnish, shellac Wood, metal, ceramics, glass
Polyurethane clear coat Wood, metal, stone, concrete, plastic; common on automotive base coats
Top coat paint Colored finish over primer or base coat for decorative and protective purposes

KBS Coatings Top Coat Options

KBS Coatings offers three top coat paints that brush, roll, or spray on with a smooth finish and no brush marks:

KBS BlackTop Chassis Coater

BlackTop Chassis Coater is a one-part, moisture-cured paint (higher humidity speeds cure time) commonly used as a UV-stable top coat over RustSeal when restoring car chassis and springs. It is hard yet flexible and was KBS's original top coat for frame and chassis restoration. Available in Gloss Black, OEM Satin Black, and Flat Black.

KBS Top Coater

Top Coater is a one-part, high-solids paint that provides twice the coverage of conventional paints with an excellent quality finish. It is UV stable and often used as a top coat over RustSeal in areas with consistent sun exposure. Top Coater is hard yet flexible and comes in 17 colors in gloss and matte finishes.

KBS MAXX

KBS MAXX is a two-part polyurethane top coat with the highest UV stability, coverage, and durability KBS offers. It is low in VOCs and HAPs, with excellent gloss and color retention, superior impact resistance, and fast dry time. Available in 17 colors in gloss, satin, and flat finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A base coat is the underlying primer or color layer applied first. A top coat goes over the base coat as the final protective and decorative layer, and must be chemically compatible with the base coat to avoid reactions that can ruin the finish.
A top coat over RustSeal is recommended for areas with regular UV exposure, since RustSeal itself is not formulated as a UV-stable finish. BlackTop or Top Coater are the two most common KBS top coats used over RustSeal for this purpose.
Top Coater and KBS MAXX are both available in 17 colors. BlackTop is available in Gloss Black, OEM Satin Black, and Flat Black.
KBS MAXX is a two-part polyurethane top coat, meaning two components are mixed together at the time of use. This gives it the highest UV stability and durability of the three KBS top coat options.
