What is the Ultimate Frame Coater Kit?
The KBS Ultimate Frame Coater Kit is a rust prevention kit that cleans, etches and seals the outside of a car or truck frame, or any 50 sq. ft. area of metal, with the KBS 3-Step System, then protects the inside of the frame rails with Cavity Coater sprayed through a Cavity Wand.

The 3-Step System handles the outside of the frame. KBS Klean removes grease, oil and road film, RustBlast removes rust and leaves a zinc phosphate etch, and RustSeal, a single-component, moisture-cured coating, bonds directly over treated rust and seals out moisture and oxygen.
Cavity Coater handles the part of the frame a brush cannot reach. The aerosol attaches to the Cavity Wand, which has a 360 degree spray tip and goes in through a 1/4 inch hole, so the inside of a frame rail gets a 1 mil film of corrosion inhibitor.
Seal the outside with RustSeal, then coat the inside with Cavity Coater. Satisfaction guaranteed (more).
Cavity Coater with the Cavity Wand reaches inside the rail. The film is rated over 4,000 hours of ASTM B-117 salt spray on steel.
The Ultimate Frame Coater Kit contains the quart-size KBS 3-Step Rust Prevention System, which is KBS Klean, RustBlast and RustSeal in your choice of 11 colors, plus a Cavity Coater aerosol with a Cavity Wand for the inside of the frame. It covers a full-size car or truck frame, or any 50 sq. ft. area, with two coats of RustSeal.
- KBS Klean: Water-based industrial strength cleaner and degreaser that removes grease, oil and road film so RustBlast and RustSeal can bond.
- RustBlast: Rust remover and metal etch that leaves a zinc phosphate layer for RustSeal to grip.
- RustSeal: Single-component, moisture-cured rust encapsulating coating, applied in a minimum of 2 coats at about 2 mils each. Pick from 11 colors.
- Cavity Coater Aerosol: Single step, super penetrating corrosion inhibiting coating that creeps into seams and welds. One coat at 1 mil dry film covers 125 sq. ft.
- Cavity Wand: Reusable applicator with a 360 degree spray tip that attaches to the aerosol and fits through a 1/4 inch hole.

Which RustSeal Color Should I Choose?
Every RustSeal color seals rust the same way, so the choice is cosmetic. Gloss levels differ by color: Gloss Black cures to about 85 to 95 percent, Satin Black and Oxide Red to 65 to 75 percent, Galvanized to about 30 percent, and every other color to 80 to 90 percent. If you plan to topcoat with BlackTop, the color underneath is your preference.
Coat the inside of a frame with the Cavity Coater aerosol and Cavity Wand. Push the wand through a 1/4 inch hole into the rail, press the spray tip and withdraw the wand at about 2 inches per second, at 70 to 80°F on a dry surface and after every exterior coating has cured. Wait 10 minutes for the coating to wick into the seams.
- Finish the outside first: Klean, RustBlast and RustSeal, then let the RustSeal cure.
- Attach the Cavity Wand by gently pushing the spray tip into the aerosol with a slight twist.
- Insert the wand into the rail, press the spray tip and withdraw at about 2 inches per second. Repeat for complete coverage if needed.
- Wait 10 minutes, then wipe off any excess with a clean rag lightly dampened with mineral spirits.
- Flush the wand by inverting the can and spraying for 10 seconds.
Pro Tip: Shake the Cavity Coater aerosol extremely well before use and again several times during the job.
Can I Use RustSeal Inside the Frame Rails Instead?
No. Use Cavity Coater for the inside of frame rails and other enclosed cavities. RustSeal is built for the outside of the metal, and KBS has not tested thinning it enough to spray through a long wand.
What If the Rail Has No Hole for the Wand?
If a cavity has no drain hole, drilling one at the lowest accessible point is best practice. A 1/4 inch hole also serves as the wand's access hole.
The Ultimate Frame Coater Kit protects both sides of the metal in one purchase. RustSeal seals the outside of the frame directly over treated rust, and Cavity Coater with the Cavity Wand reaches inside the rails where a brush cannot go. The 3-Step System prep is included, so the surface is ready for coating.
- Inside and Outside Protection: RustSeal protects the outside of the surface and Cavity Coater protects the interior cavity.
- Applies Directly Over Treated Rust: RustSeal has high surface tolerance and bonds to remaining flash rust after KBS Klean and RustBlast.
- Single Component RustSeal: Ready to use with no hardener to mix.
- Moisture Cured: RustSeal combines with atmospheric moisture to cure and is strengthened by repeated exposure to moisture.
- Non-Porous Barrier: Forms a waterproof barrier against moisture and oxygen that resists mold and mildew.
- Flexible: The coating allows for expansion and contraction and will not crack, flake or peel.
- Chemical and Abrasion Resistant: Repels fuels, oils, most acids and alkalis, and graffiti. VOC compliant and lead-free.
- Heat Tolerant: RustSeal withstands up to 600°F (316°C) continuous once fully cured.
- Cold Tolerant Cavity Film: Cavity Coater passes the low temperature flaking test to minus 60°F.
The Ultimate Frame Coater Kit coats car and truck frames, chassis, floor pans, suspension parts and almost every metal part on a car except the exhaust. The same 3-Step System also works on marine, industrial and household metal, from boat trailers to hand rails. Cavity Coater adds protection inside rails, rockers and other enclosed cavities.
- Automotive
- Chassis, floor pans, wheel wells, fenders, trunks, engines, suspension parts, axles, roof drains, springs and doors. Almost every part on a car except the exhaust.
- Marine
- Engine rooms, hulls, masts, bilges, heat exchangers, decks, chain lockers, pumps, fuel tank exteriors and boat trailers.
- Industrial
- Heavy transport, steam pipes, sealing concrete, air conditioning repair, fiberglass repair, rebar coating, steel roofs, and fuel and waste-water treatment tanks.
- Household
- Hand rails, support beams, lawn equipment, garage floors, pipe work, appliances and lead-based paint encapsulation.
Safety: When spraying RustSeal, always wear an air-supplied respirator (NIOSH/MSHA approved organic vapor particulate respirator), gloves and safety glasses, and work in a well-ventilated area. When Cavity Coater is sprayed into an enclosed area such as a door panel, the solvents may need several hours to escape, so keep that area away from heat, sparks, electrical devices and open flames.
The Ultimate Frame Coater Kit covers a full-size car or truck frame, or any 50 sq. ft. area, with two coats of RustSeal at about 2 mils each. The Cavity Coater aerosol covers 125 sq. ft. at 1 mil. Apply thin, covering coats rather than stretching the kit past its coverage.
Coverage by component
| Component | Typical Coverage |
| RustSeal (kit quart) | About 50 sq. ft. at two coats of about 2 mils each |
| Cavity Coater Aerosol | 125 sq. ft. at 1 mil thickness |
Timing note: Allow 2 to 6 hours between RustSeal coats. If more than 8 hours pass, wait 24 hours and scuff with 320 grit before recoating.
Pro Tip: Two thin coats beat one heavy coat. RustSeal cures by pulling moisture from the air, and a thick coat can skin over and trap solvent underneath.
The Ultimate Frame Coater Kit adds Cavity Coater and a Cavity Wand to the same 3-Step System found in the Frame Coater Kit, so it protects the inside of the frame rails as well as the outside. Both kits cover about 50 sq. ft. with two coats of RustSeal.

The Frame Coater Kit is the better fit when the inside of the frame is not part of the job. When the rails are enclosed and rust starts from the inside, the Ultimate kit covers both sides in one order.
Do the outside first and the inside last. RustSeal is not UV stable, so any area in direct sun needs an opaque, UV-stable topcoat. BlackTop is the frame and chassis topcoat.
- Step 1 to 3: Klean, RustBlast, RustSeal
- Clean, etch and seal the outside of the frame with two coats of RustSeal.
- Step 4: BlackTop on exposed areas
- Topcoat while the final RustSeal coat is 3 to 8 hours old, or let it cure 24 hours and scuff with 320 grit.
- Step 5: Cavity Coater inside
- Spray the inside of the rails last, after every exterior coating has fully cured.

The KBS Ultimate Frame Coater Kit is a quart-size rust prevention kit that cleans, etches and seals a full-size car or truck frame, or any 50 sq. ft. area, with KBS Klean, RustBlast and two coats of RustSeal. It also includes a Cavity Coater aerosol and a Cavity Wand to protect the inside of the frame rails.
Attach the Cavity Wand to the Cavity Coater aerosol, push the wand through a 1/4 inch hole into the rail, press the spray tip and withdraw the wand at about 2 inches per second. Spray at 70 to 80°F onto a dry surface, wait 10 minutes for the coating to wick into seams, then wipe off excess with a rag lightly dampened with mineral spirits.
Use Cavity Coater inside frame rails and other enclosed cavities. KBS has not tested reducing RustSeal enough to spray it through a shut-off nozzle and long wand, and a reduced RustSeal would not protect nearly as well as Cavity Coater does. RustSeal belongs on the outside of the frame.
Clean with KBS Klean, treat with RustBlast, rinse and dry, then brush or spray two coats of RustSeal and let it cure. Apply Cavity Coater last, after every exterior coating has fully cured. It is normal to get Cavity Coater on the outside surface, and RustSeal will not adhere to it, so the order matters.
The kit covers a full-size car or truck frame, or any 50 sq. ft. area, with two coats of RustSeal at about 2 mils each. The Cavity Coater aerosol covers 125 sq. ft. at 1 mil thickness. Apply thin, covering coats and do not stretch the kit past its coverage.
Keep the surface wet with RustBlast for at least 30 minutes on smooth or lightly rusted metal, 40 to 60 minutes on moderate rust, and 1 to 2 hours on heavy rust or corrosion. Never let it dry. Rinse with water before it dries, then let the surface dry completely before RustSeal. RustBlast works at 55 to 90°F.
Recoat RustSeal once the previous coat is dry to the touch and leaves no fingerprint, typically 2 to 6 hours depending on temperature and humidity. If more than 8 hours pass, wait 24 hours and lightly scuff the cured coat with 320 grit or a green Scotch-Brite pad before the next coat.
On areas out of direct sun, such as the underside of a vehicle, RustSeal works as the final finish. RustSeal is not UV stable, so exposed areas need an opaque, UV-stable topcoat such as BlackTop. Apply the topcoat while the final RustSeal coat is 3 to 8 hours old, or let it cure 24 hours and scuff with 320 grit first.
Apply RustSeal between 55 and 82°F, ideally at 30 to 80 percent relative humidity, and avoid rain or any condition where the surface cannot stay dry. Cavity Coater and the Cavity Wand work best between 70 and 80°F on a dry surface.
No. Do not paint or caulk over Cavity Coater, which is why it goes on after all paints and coatings have completely cured. Remove any excess with a clean rag lightly dampened with mineral spirits, and flush the Cavity Wand by inverting the can and spraying for 10 seconds.
