RustBlast is applied full strength to a dry surface with a spray bottle, brush, roller, or backpack sprayer, kept wet for 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on rust severity, then rinsed off with water. Apply between 55 and 90 degrees F. RustBlast dissolves rust chemically and leaves a zinc phosphate base coat that gives RustSeal, and most other paints, a prepared surface to bond to for up to 7 days.

Surface Preparation:

The surface to be treated should be free of dirt, oil, grease, and other contaminants. The cleaner the surface, the more effective RustBlast will work. Scrape off any loose rust, mill scale, or peeling paint, then clean with a water-based cleaner and degreaser like KBS Klean. Avoid solvent-based cleaners, since they can leave an invisible residue that interferes with paint adhesion and appearance.

Shake well before each use. RustBlast is more effective when the surface and ambient temperature are warmer.

Application:

Liberally apply RustBlast full strength to a dry surface using a spray bottle, brush, roller, or backpack sprayer for larger applications. Never dilute it.

Re-apply often and as needed to keep the surface wet for a minimum of 30 minutes on smooth surfaces, 40 to 60 minutes on moderately rusted surfaces, and 1 to 2 hours on heavily rusted surfaces. Do not allow the surface to dry during this time.

Rust on Tools and Hardware

To remove rust from equipment and tools, soak the item in RustBlast for 30 minutes up to 24 hours, then rinse it off with water using a scotch brite pad. This leaves rust-free tools and equipment.

Non-Ferrous Metals:

For removal of light corrosion or etching on non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, brass, and copper, prepare the surface as above and apply RustBlast for 10 to 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely.

PROTECTIVE GLOVES AND EYEWEAR SHOULD BE WORN AT ALL TIMES WHEN USING THIS PRODUCT.

Rinsing and Coating Window:

After treatment, rinse thoroughly with water before the RustBlast dries, then allow the surface to dry completely. Once dry, RustBlast leaves a slight white powder residue, which is zinc phosphate and aids in adhesion of coatings such as RustSeal. Items should typically be coated within 7 days of treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions About RustBlast

The slight white powdery residue is zinc phosphate. RustBlast leaves that behind because it aids in adhesion of coatings such as RustSeal.

Yes. RustBlast works very well as a metal prep and etch for most paints, not just RustSeal.

Yes. Soak the tool or equipment for 30 minutes up to 24 hours, then rinse it off with water using a scotch brite pad. You will be left with rust-free tools and equipment.

Yes. It is important to rinse before the RustBlast dries to avoid a heavy layer of zinc phosphate.

Apply RustBlast between 55 and 90 degrees F, surface and ambient temperature. RustBlast works faster and more aggressively as the metal gets warmer, so a cold surface will slow rust removal and may need a longer dwell time to reach the same result.

Non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, brass, and copper only need 10 to 20 minutes of RustBlast contact time to remove light corrosion and etch the surface, compared to 30 minutes or more on ferrous metals like steel and cast iron.
