Putting body filler over RustSeal is common and the process is simple. There are three methods, and they are the same three used for top coating: work inside the dry-to-the-touch window, or let RustSeal fully cure and scuff it, or let it fully cure and dust it with Fusion Self-Etching Primer. All three give the filler a surface it can grip.

Body Filler Over RustSeal: Quick Facts

Method 1: filler while dry to touch, 3 to 6 hours
Method 2: cure 24 hours, scuff 320 grit
Method 3: cure 24 hours, dust Fusion SEP
Sealing the metal first is the point. Body filler is porous and does not stop rust. Applying RustSeal to the bare metal before the filler means the rust is already sealed underneath, rather than trapped under filler where it can keep working.

The Three Methods

  1. Apply filler while RustSeal is dry to the touch. Once the second or final coat no longer leaves a fingerprint, usually 3 to 6 hours depending on temperature and humidity, you can go straight to filler.
  2. Cure, then scuff. Let the final coat of RustSeal fully cure for at least 24 hours, scuff the surface with 320 grit, then apply the body filler.
  3. Cure, then prime. Let the final coat fully cure for at least 24 hours, dust with Fusion Self-Etching Primer, let the primer cure about 30 minutes, then apply the body filler.

Pick whichever fits your schedule. Always review the RustSeal application directions before starting.

Frequently Asked Questions: Body Filler Over RustSeal

There are three effective methods. Apply the filler once the second or final coat of RustSeal is dry to the touch and leaves no fingerprint, usually 3 to 6 hours. Or let the final coat fully cure for at least 24 hours, scuff with 320 grit, then apply filler. Or let it fully cure at least 24 hours, dust with Fusion Self-Etching Primer, let that cure 30 minutes, then apply filler.
RustSeal goes on the prepared bare metal first, then the filler goes over it. That way the rust is sealed before the filler is added. Body filler on its own is porous and does not stop corrosion, so filler applied straight onto rusty metal leaves the rust active underneath.
Use 320 grit. Scuffing is only required if the RustSeal has fully cured for 24 hours or more. Inside the dry-to-the-touch window no scuffing is needed.
The window runs roughly 3 to 6 hours after the final coat, depending on temperature and humidity. Miss it and nothing is ruined: let the coating cure a full 24 hours and use the scuff method or the Fusion Self-Etching Primer method instead.
Yes. Once the filler is shaped and sanded, finish the repair as you normally would. If the finished panel will sit in direct sunlight, remember that RustSeal itself is not UV stable, so the visible topcoat should be an opaque, UV-stable product such as BlackTop, KBS Top Coater, or KBS MAXX.
