RustSeal Questions and Answers
Can I Top Coat RustSeal?
Yes, and in direct sunlight you should. Use an opaque, UV-stable topcoat; a clear coat will not protect RustSeal from UV.
Can I Thin RustSeal With Lacquer Thinner?
No. Use KBS #1 Thinner or Xylene at 5 to 10 percent. Lacquer thinner is for clean-up only.
Can RustSeal Go Over Another Coating?
Yes if the existing coating is fully cured and prepped, though over paint it may not permanently seal the rust underneath.
Do I Need RustBlast After Sandblasting?
Not after fresh sand blasting with gloved handling. Plastic media, bead, and soda blasting still require RustBlast.
How Much RustSeal for a Car Chassis?
One quart covers a standard frame with two coats. Plan on two quarts for the full underbody carriage and frame.
In What Temperatures Can I Apply RustSeal?
Between 55 and 82 degrees F for the product, the air, and the surface. Recoat in 2 to 6 hours, full cure at 24 hours.
What Is the Best Way to Open the Can?
Use a curved or L-shaped can opener and work around the lid in stages. Never pry from one spot with a screwdriver.
How Do I Put Body Filler Over RustSeal?
Three methods: filler while dry to the touch, or after a 24 hour cure with a 320 grit scuff, or after a Fusion SEP dust coat.
Why Is My Satin Black Glossier Than Expected?
Usually incomplete mixing. Matting agents settle in the can and must be fully re-suspended before you apply.
