Order KBS Rust Converter
KBS Rust Converter is applied in three steps: brush off loose and flaky rust, degrease with KBS Klean if needed, then spray steady even strokes from 8 to 12 inches away. Apply when the can is between 50°F and 90°F. A chemical reaction turns the rust black, and the converted surface is ready to topcoat after 24 hours.
To achieve expert results, please take the time to carefully read and understand the following directions before you begin your restoration project. These directions are meant to be general guidelines only and do not cover every application or environmental situation. Theoretical Coverage:
KBS Rust Converter 12oz Aerosol should convert up to 20 sq. ft.
Coverage varies with surface condition. Heavily pitted or scaled rust has far more surface area than smooth rust, so expect less coverage per can on rough surfaces.
Surface Preparation:
NOTE: The surface must be rusty.
KBS Rust Converter is not designed to use on any non-rusty surfaces or surfaces where you have a mix of rusty areas and non-rusty areas. Use a wire brush or sandpaper to remove as much loose and flaky rust as possible. If needed, clean the surface well with KBS Klean.
You do not need to grind or sand the rust down to bare metal. The chemistry needs rust to react with, so removing all of it defeats the purpose. If your metal is clean or only lightly rusted in spots, look at RustSeal and the KBS 3-Step System instead.
Application:
For best results, use when can is between 50°F and 90°F (10°C and 32°C). ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES AND EYE WEAR when using KBS Rust Converter. Always use NIOSH/MSHA approved air supplied respirator.
Shaking the Can
Shake can at least one minute after rattle is heard and occasionally during use.
Spraying KBS Rust Converter
Spray surface with steady even strokes at a distance of 8 to 12 inches. A chemical reaction will cause the rust to turn black.
If the Spray Head Clogs
If clogging develops, turn sprayhead ¼ turn or remove and clean sprayhead slot. DO NOT stick pin or other objects into can opening. With can and sprayhead pointed away from you, reinsert sprayhead with a gentle twisting motion.
Dry Time & Recoating:
Dry Time*:
To touch 10 minutes
To recoat/topcoat 24 hours
*At 72F, 50% humidity, 1.5 mil thickness
Allow 24 hours before applying a second coat or when topcoating with a different coating.
NOTE: Curing/Recoat time is extended with multiple coats and excessively thick coats.
Topcoating:
Once the converted surface has cured for 24 hours it is ready for paint. KBS Rust Converter is compatible with most topcoats and acts as the primer, so no separate primer is required.
KBS Rust Converter does not have to be topcoated if a matte black finish is what you want. Left as is, it is a durable, paintable, inert surface with a flat black appearance.
