KBS Rust Converter is applied in three steps: brush off loose and flaky rust, degrease with KBS Klean if needed, then spray steady even strokes from 8 to 12 inches away. Apply when the can is between 50°F and 90°F. A chemical reaction turns the rust black, and the converted surface is ready to topcoat after 24 hours.

Theoretical Coverage:

KBS Rust Converter 12oz Aerosol should convert up to 20 sq. ft.

Coverage varies with surface condition. Heavily pitted or scaled rust has far more surface area than smooth rust, so expect less coverage per can on rough surfaces.

Surface Preparation:

NOTE: The surface must be rusty.

KBS Rust Converter is not designed to use on any non-rusty surfaces or surfaces where you have a mix of rusty areas and non-rusty areas. Use a wire brush or sandpaper to remove as much loose and flaky rust as possible. If needed, clean the surface well with KBS Klean.

You do not need to grind or sand the rust down to bare metal. The chemistry needs rust to react with, so removing all of it defeats the purpose. If your metal is clean or only lightly rusted in spots, look at RustSeal and the KBS 3-Step System instead.

Application:

For best results, use when can is between 50°F and 90°F (10°C and 32°C). ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES AND EYE WEAR when using KBS Rust Converter. Always use NIOSH/MSHA approved air supplied respirator.

Shaking the Can

Shake can at least one minute after rattle is heard and occasionally during use.

Spraying KBS Rust Converter

Spray surface with steady even strokes at a distance of 8 to 12 inches. A chemical reaction will cause the rust to turn black.

If the Spray Head Clogs

If clogging develops, turn sprayhead ¼ turn or remove and clean sprayhead slot. DO NOT stick pin or other objects into can opening. With can and sprayhead pointed away from you, reinsert sprayhead with a gentle twisting motion.

Dry Time & Recoating:

Dry Time*:

To touch 10 minutes
To recoat/topcoat 24 hours
*At 72F, 50% humidity, 1.5 mil thickness

Allow 24 hours before applying a second coat or when topcoating with a different coating.

NOTE: Curing/Recoat time is extended with multiple coats and excessively thick coats.

Topcoating:

Once the converted surface has cured for 24 hours it is ready for paint. KBS Rust Converter is compatible with most topcoats and acts as the primer, so no separate primer is required.

KBS Rust Converter does not have to be topcoated if a matte black finish is what you want. Left as is, it is a durable, paintable, inert surface with a flat black appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions — KBS Rust Converter

For best results, use when can is between 50°F and 90°F (10°C and 32°C). Store the can between 40°F and 100°F. If the can has been sitting in a cold shop or truck, bring it inside and let it come up to room temperature before you spray.
Yes. KBS Rust Converter is not designed to use on any non-rusty surfaces or surfaces where you have a mix of rusty areas and non-rusty areas. The product works by reacting chemically with the rust, so it needs rust to react with. For clean or lightly rusted metal, use RustSeal instead.
No. Use a wire brush or sandpaper to remove as much loose and flaky rust as possible, but do not take the surface down to bare metal. If needed, clean the surface well with KBS Klean before you spray.
Allow 24 hours before applying a second coat or when topcoating with a different coating. It dries to touch in 10 minutes, but that is not the same as ready to paint. Curing and recoat time is extended with multiple coats and excessively thick coats.
Only where rust has not fully turned black. The color change is your indicator that the chemical reaction has taken place. If any areas still show rust color after the first coat has cured, wait the full 24 hours and apply a second coat to those spots.
If clogging develops, turn sprayhead ¼ turn or remove and clean sprayhead slot. DO NOT stick pin or other objects into can opening. With can and sprayhead pointed away from you, reinsert sprayhead with a gentle twisting motion.
KBS Rust Converter 12oz Aerosol should convert up to 20 sq. ft. That is a theoretical figure on a reasonably smooth surface. Heavily pitted or scaled rust has more surface area and will use more product.
Yes. KBS Rust Converter does not have to be topcoated if a matte black finish is what you want. It cures to a flat black surface with a gloss reading under 15 on a 60° gloss meter, and it is rated for heat up to 250°F.
