BlackTop OEM Satin Black (and all matte sheens of BlackTop) are heavily pigmented. It is critically important to get all matting agents mixed back into suspension using a mechanical mixer attached to a drill (such as the KBS Hurricane Paint Mixer) or at minimum a paint stir stick. Effective mixing includes repeatedly touching the bottom of the can and lifting to fully disperse any settled pigments and/or matting agents.

If BlackTop is not mixed thoroughly before each application — and occasionally during application — the finish may turn out glossier than desired.

Be sure to apply BlackTop in thin coats only to achieve a proper matte finish.

Applying medium or heavy coats can cause the finish to appear glossier than intended.

If a flatter finish is desired, you may reduce BlackTop by up to 20% using KBS #1 Thinner or xylene to increase matting.

When first applied, BlackTop OEM Satin Black may appear glossier than expected. However, it will matte down as it cures. Always allow a full 24-hour cure before evaluating the final sheen.

BlackTop OEM Satin Black – Frequently Asked Questions

Why does BlackTop OEM Satin Black need to be mixed thoroughly?

BlackTop OEM Satin Black and all matte sheens are heavily pigmented. Proper mixing is required to fully re-suspend the matting agents and pigments that settle at the bottom of the can. Using a mechanical mixer, such as the KBS Hurricane Paint Mixer, helps ensure consistent color and correct sheen.

What happens if BlackTop is not mixed well before application?

If BlackTop is not mixed thoroughly before and during application, the finish may appear glossier than intended due to uneven distribution of matting agents.

How should BlackTop be applied for a proper matte finish?

BlackTop should be applied in thin coats only. Applying medium or heavy coats can increase gloss and prevent the coating from achieving the desired matte appearance.

Can BlackTop be reduced to achieve a flatter finish?

Yes. BlackTop may be reduced by up to 20% using KBS #1 Thinner or xylene to help increase matting and achieve a flatter finish.

Why does BlackTop OEM Satin Black look glossy when first applied?

When first applied, BlackTop OEM Satin Black may appear glossier than expected. The coating will matte down as it cures. Always allow a full 24-hour cure before evaluating the final sheen.
