If you've ever struggled to get a RustSeal can open, you're not alone — and there's a good reason for it. Unlike ordinary paint, RustSeal's primary resin is an adhesive. When the can is shipped, vibration and pressure can work small amounts of coating material into the seam between the lid and the can, causing the lid to bond more tightly than you'd expect. This is completely normal and not a sign of a defective can.
The good news is that opening it correctly takes just a little patience and the right tool. A paint can opener with a curved or “L”-shaped tip is strongly recommended — flat-head screwdrivers tend to warp the lid and can compromise the seal you'll need to reseal the can later. Using the paint can opener, gently lift one small section of the lid. Rotate the can approximately 10 degrees and repeat. Continue working your way around the can until the lid has been loosened once. Then repeat the process, lifting slightly more each time, until the lid releases.
