What are the best storage tips for DiamondFinish Clear when dipping fishing lures?

Clear coating fishing lures and crankbaits by dipping is a very common application for DiamondFinish Clear. Below are proven storage and handling tips that help you minimize waste and keep the product usable longer.

  • Buy the smallest container size you’ll realistically use. If you expect to use a gallon over the course of a year, consider buying multiple smaller containers (for example, quarts or pints) instead of one gallon to reduce repeated air exposure.
  • Decant into clean glass jars. When you receive the product, open and stir well, then divide it into clean glass jars. Use KBS Paint Saver in each jar and place painter’s plastic between the jar and lid to improve the seal.
  • Minimize lid-off time. DiamondFinish Clear is a moisture-cured urethane (not a typical household enamel/latex). It cures when exposed to moisture in the air, so keep containers closed as much as possible.
  • If it thickens, restore viscosity as needed. As the product ages it may thicken. You can add KBS #1 Thinner or Xylene to bring it back to normal consistency. This can typically be done a few times as you work through the container.
  • Use KBS Paint Saver to reduce premature curing. Higher humidity can accelerate curing. KBS Paint Saver contains inert, dry gases that displace humid air in the container, helping prevent premature curing and hardening.
  • Use painter’s plastic under the lid. Place painter’s plastic between the container and lid to help create a tighter seal and prevent the lid from sticking.
  • Store in a cool, dry place. Avoid hot storage locations (like many garages in summer). Cooler, drier storage helps extend usable life of DiamondFinish Clear.
