For best results, always clean the surface to be coated with Motor Coater using KBS Klean, then etch the surface with RustBlast before applying your finish coat.

TIP: For surfaces that are prone to rusting, pitted, or coarse in texture, apply RustSeal Galvanized as a base coat first — it smooths the surface and locks out rust under your Motor Coater finish coat.

Frequently Asked Questions — Motor Coater Surface Preparation

Motor Coater is a self-priming, direct-to-metal finish coat — a separate primer is not required. However, for maximum adhesion and durability, always clean the surface with KBS Klean and etch it with RustBlast before applying. On pitted, coarse, or rust-prone surfaces, a base coat of RustSeal Galvanized is strongly recommended for a smooth, long-lasting finish.
Use KBS Klean to thoroughly degrease the surface, removing all oil, grease, and contaminants. After cleaning, apply RustBlast to etch the bare metal and remove any surface rust. This two-step prep creates a chemically active surface that promotes maximum adhesion for Motor Coater.
For surfaces that are pitted, coarse, or prone to rusting, apply RustSeal Galvanized as a base coat before Motor Coater. RustSeal encapsulates existing rust, smooths rough surfaces, and forms a permanent barrier that prevents rust from forming under your finish coat.
Motor Coater will bond to clean, bare metal, but skipping the prep steps significantly reduces adhesion and long-term durability — especially in high-heat engine environments. For the best results, always follow the full KBS system: clean with KBS Klean, etch with RustBlast, and (if needed) seal with RustSeal before applying Motor Coater.
Follow the KBS 3-Step System in this order for best results:
  1. Step 1 — Clean: Apply KBS Klean to remove all grease, oil, and contaminants.
  2. Step 2 — Etch & Rust Proof: Apply RustBlast to etch bare metal and neutralize rust.
  3. Step 3 — Seal (if needed): For pitted or rusty surfaces, apply RustSeal Galvanized as a base coat.
  4. Step 4 — Finish Coat: Apply Motor Coater for a durable, high-heat finish.
